A Certain Woman Brake His Skull
Judges 9:52-54 (KJB) And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire. 53 And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech’s head, and all to brake his skull. 54 Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.
If you have ever held a piece of millstone you understand just how heavy it is. These verses are certainly interesting as a piece of a millstone is used to inflict a potential death blow.
Abimelech was a wicked man who was caught up in a battle and was trying to bring down a certain tower. While he was caught up in this fight and a piece of millstone was hurled at his head. Though it did not immediately inflict death this heavy rock did gravely injure him. When Abimelech understood that it was a woman who hurled this weighty stone he sought out a man to slay him with his sword unable to face his own death at the hands of a woman!
This certainly sounds like a case of ancient pride in the works!
It also proves the fact that God can and will use whoever is available in bringing about His will and judgment. This woman was incidental in this event and her name was not mentioned in God’s Word. Perhaps she is named in accounts included in the historical record of the times.
For the record, it was Abimelech’s armorbearer, when it was requested, who inflicted the final assault upon him bringing death. However, a woman hurled the fatal blow maiming him and wounding him almost to his death.
