Calvary – The Spiritual Beauty
Psalm 27:4-5 (KJB) One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple. For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
David certainly understood the eternal beauty of God in every situation of his life. David found both hope and beauty in a relationship with God before the spiritual events of Calvary.
There is great spiritual beauty in the finished work Calvary. Certainly, this loveliness is not found in Jesus Christ brutally hanging upon the cross, but that He is no longer there, or present in the grave. The spiritual charm and elegance of Calvary are found in His finished work. It is an unlimited grace and mercy and removal of the debt of sin that mankind could never provide for himself. It took the presence and supernatural power of God and the shed blood sacrifice of His Only Son to complete the necessary spiritual work of Calvary to bring great spiritual attractiveness both inside and out of a man, replacing his natural ugliness from the effects of sin naturally found inside the heart of every man. This work ushered in the possibility of God’s presence to dwell inside the heart of every willing man forever.
This majestic and eternal loveliness is perpetually found in the eternal results accomplished by His finished work!
Today, man can better savor and reflect upon the “spiritual flavor” of life, both before and after Calvary. Being alive on this side of Calvary allows for a better understanding of the importance of the spiritual eternal depth His shed blood purchased for all mankind. We live in a time, in this Age of Grace, when we can read divine accounts of Calvary in God’s Word and view Calvary from a spiritual vantage point of being alive beyond the cross. This illuminates and spiritually colors the spiritual depth and importance then, now, and forever.
In ancient biblical times, mankind was looking forward to a coming spiritual eternal transaction, which was promised by God. It was to be an event to take place in the time of God’s choosing sometime in the future. Even though various aspects of Jesus Christ’s death on the cross were prophesied throughout the canon of the Old Testament, in detail as found in Psalm 22, Isaiah Chapter 53, and in the account of Noah’s Ark found in the first book of the Bible, Genesis, a timeless illustration of salvation.
However, the great spiritual implications of Calvary, as found in God’s Word, could not be fathomed or understood by man’s finite thinking, before His death, burial, and resurrection took place among many witnesses and was divinely inspired to be recorded in the New Testament of His Word.
Even today, the immense beauty of Calvary is still unfolding in the hearts and minds of every child of God. The regenerate man will not get the complete aspect of its stunning eternal elegance until he can view it as a whole spiritual package; including the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, through God’s holy viewpoint from the spiritual advantage of eternity. Beholding its effects from this side of heaven is always going to be beautiful but spiritually limited and inadequate. The moment a regenerated man comes into the heavenly realm in sweet eternal fellowship with God he will be made spiritually whole and complete.
Did you know that in eternity, every man, regenerate as well as lost, will fully realize God’s beauty, including His supernatural power and presence and be moved to humbly acknowledge to His Son Jesus Christ upon bended knee? Every person will bow in His presence. It will be no longer possible to ignore Him by refusing to properly recognize Him. Those who are wicked in heart will fall to their knees before Him, be judged, and sentenced to hell for their constant “spiritual cynicism” and unbelief.
However, those who are found to be in spiritual fellowship with Him will be made complete and spiritually whole the very moment he enters into the eternal realm, and you can count on it!
The Bible says:
Philippians 2:8-11 (KJB) And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Certainly, for the naturally wicked man on this earth, Calvary is not a thing of beauty. It is not spiritually attractive, it is loathsome and detestable. It mongers fear and unrest inside his dark and evil leaning heart.
God’s unconditional love was generously placed into eternal action. It has always been a never-ending love which does not ever die, become tired, or flutter away. It is the same love of God in the beginning and remaining with Him forever. God is the both Author and Finisher of our soul. The unconditional love work of Calvary began the regenerate man’s “spiritual beautification process” the minute his soul receives God’s supernatural presence and power. Man, who looks to God choosing to place his trust in Him, receives His gift of love, grace, and mercy inside his softened heart thereby ushering in certain eternal life. His spiritual presence causes a man to be in agreement with God, loving what God loves and hating that which He abhors, and being merciful in truth with others as he sows seeds of God’s gospel message.
New spiritual life is the inflation of, or reception of His beautifying mercy and grace, as a supernatural burst of eternally fresh air at work in man’s humble heart. This fresh air from heaven keeps the quickened alive man afloat in this world which is marred with the ugliness of sin and shame and provides man with spiritual buoyancy as he does the will of God on this earth and for all eternity.
Receiving God’s eternal spiritual attractiveness paints an eternal beauty both inside the heart and upon the outward aura of every regenerate man and woman which cannot be erased or covered. This new life superbly illuminates his soul with an eternal loveliness which will never fade or dull as mankind is illuminated with Christ-likeness in an evil leaning and a spiritually darkened world.
While Jesus Christ’s physical death on the cross was dreadful thank God, He is no longer there! The empty tomb serves as a beautiful earthly reminder of the finished work of Calvary. It is a settled place. It is not a place of sorrow but a place of joy and spiritual delight. It is not a stopping place but was a stopover place. Even if we are not sure of its exact physical location on this earth, the inspired record of its existence is a perpetual reminder that He is no longer in the grave for He has risen!
