Christian love where has it gone?
2 John 7-11 (KJV) For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.
Here we see in verse 7 the word “for” that links this thought with the preceding one to love one another. At first glance, this might seem unrelated. However, truth is stimulated by the virtue of God’s people loving each other. To the contrary, cold truth without the warmth of genuine Christian love, becomes a spawning bed for apostasy. Those exposed to the truth, without the love of Christian brethren warming it, are easy candidates to be enticed into spiritual error. The devil knows this and will pounce upon those who have received the truth without the sweetness of Christian love from other brethren. Therefore, it is incumbent that we not only uphold the truth but do so in an environment of obvious godly love. Many an apostate has been led astray although knowing the truth never being cemented thereto by genuine love by professing Christians. Thus, truth without love can quickly be bent toward error. Love is the ingredient which will help preserve the truth on a personal basis.
John thus moves from principle to practice. He warns about those coming even to our doorstep with defective beliefs in Jesus Christ. Whether or not the Gnostics did so in his day is not known. However, the Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Mormons clearly do so today. The Word of God therefore gives clear instructions. (1) Don’t let them in your house and (2) don’t bid them God speed. The thought is to not encourage such a one in his error. To give greetings is to wish for his success. The greater principle is to have nothing to do with those who advocate defective doctrine. Don’t allow them in the door and don’t even wish them well. Have nothing to do with them.
When you share your testimony are you doing this in love? It would be heartbreaking when we get to Heaven to learn that what we lacked the most was love. Why is love so lacking in our world today? Could it be we are to involved in ourselves to care about those around us?
1 John 4:8 (KJV) He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
