Living for Jesus Christ
Identified with the Cross of Jesus
124 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church:
We now come to a verse that can be difficult to understand. Some would like to supplement the sufferings of Christ with the Virgin Mary and granting indulgences. Jesus said in John 19:30 (KJB) “It is finished.” Surely when Jesus shouted these words, he meant “it is finished.” After all, it is impossible to add to a finished work.
So then what is Paul saying here? Is it possible to add something to the sufferings of Christ? Can our good works and our suffering add to what Jesus has done? Of course not!! All of our righteousness is “as filthy rags,” as the prophet says in Isaiah 64:6.
We are worthless sinners saved by grace. Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJB) “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
