Colossians Bible Study – Chapter 2 Verse 2-4

Colossians Bible Study The Truth about Religion – Perceive the Truth Regarding Christ

An Increasing Way

Colossians 2:2-4

2 That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; 3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4 And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words. Colossians 2:2-4 KJV

This sentence is one of the great Pauline thoughts that we will break down from the whole to its parts.

Unto all the riches – First, a proper knowledge of Jesus Christ provides riches.  We find richness in learning of Jesus Christ.  This word is used to describe the rich man in Luke 12:16-20 that was considering building bigger barns for his wealth.  It is used of the rich man who allowed Lazarus to sit at his gate in Luke 16.  This word riches also describes spiritual riches that are available in Jesus Christ.  Once we understand the spiritual riches available in Jesus Christ, the riches of the world’s cults are vanity.

The full assurance of understanding – A proper knowledge of Jesus Christ gives our mind understanding to comprehend the mystery, or “acknowledge the mystery of God,”  which is Jesus Christ.  Mystery does not mean that there was anything hidden, or that could not be understood respecting this doctrine when it was made known.

There are many “religions” today that teach another Jesus Christ not found in the Bible.  There were “cults” trying to fool the Colossians with another gospel.  Wherever Jesus Christ is preached, we will also find the “religious” preaching another gospel created by “Satan.”  New Age Bibles and teachers claim to have new knowledge.  Jesus Christ gave us all we need in the King James Bible.

An Infinite Way

Colossians 2:2b-3 (KJB) “to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; 3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

Jesus Christ contains both divine and human natures. As God, He is equal with the Father, and possesses in Himself all the necessities of Deity; but as a man, He is endowed with moral riches greater than that of angels. There is in Christ everything for every possible want of man abundant and endless riches of eternal and saving wisdom.

The meek and humble believer who is saved by Jesus Christ has access to more knowledge and wisdom than any unsaved person, regardless of how brilliant that person may be.  In Jesus is all wisdom and knowledge.

Jesus prophesied about the last days and said this:

Luke 21:25 (KJB) “And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;”

Jesus said that the world would be at wit’s end with no understanding of what to do.  Who has the answers about militant Islam, about terrorism, diseases, or about peace?  Our society has plenty of knowledge but lacks wisdom.  But in Jesus, we have all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

An Indestructible Way

Colossians 2:4 (KJB) “And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.”

To beguile someone means to deceive them with false reasoning.  We see this type of deception from “religion” on a regular basis.  Calvinists, Messianic Christians, Hebrew Roots, Jehovahs Witnesses, Mormons to name a few.  They use God’s word out of context to deceive people with enticing words.  By knowing Jesus Christ and His Word, we can have an indestructible way.  The worldly cultic religions are exposed when filtered by the Word of God.

Luke 21:25 (KJB) “And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;””
