Colossians Bible Study – Chapter 2 Verse 8-10

Colossians Bible Study The Truth about Religion – Proving the Lie –of Worldly Reasoning

Intellectualism – The Peril

Colossians 2:8-10 (KJB) Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.  For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.  And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

“Beware lest any man spoil you.”  There is a constant danger of young Christians being led astray by worldly influences.  Websters defines this word spoil as “to pull asunder,” or to “plunder.”  This word is only used one time in the Bible, and that is here.  Paul is warning us to beware unless we are carried away from the truth of God’s Word as booty, or plunder.

Being spoiled or carried off as treasure is the danger of false teaching.  False teachers are trying to persuade people to abandon the truth for error.  To be spoiled by false teachers means to give up the truth we find in the Bible for lies.

The Plan

Colossians 2:8 (KJB) “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.”

Notice the word deceit used here in this verse.  This word in the New Testament is always used of Satan and his works.

Human reasoning, philosophy (“intellectualism”), is limited.  Some truth is beyond the scope of human thinking.  For instance, we cannot know by logic how the universe began.  We cannot understand what someone else is thinking unless they reveal that to us.  The truth in the Bible is not explained by human reasoning or intellect.  The truth of God’s Word is the result of God’s revelation to man.  In God’s Word, He tells us things that we could never know apart from divine revelation such as what God is like, His attributes, His character, His will, His attitude, and His redemptive purpose.

Colossians 2:8-9Satan always imitates God, so we are not shocked that he has his minions write false bibles.  Satan has inspired people to write books that deceive millions.  Behind every false religion or cult is the devious “rulers of the darkness of this world” (Eph. 6:12).  Satan is elated by creating false doctrines, traditions, and fake bibles for people to follow.  Why are there so many different denominations?  Satan uses them to create confusion and to spread false teachings.   Follow God’s Word the Bible– and not just any Bible.

The word philosophy occurs only here in the Bible.  To the Greeks, this word meant “the highest effort of intellect.”  Paul chooses this word here and then discards it forever.  Philosophy is a word completely inadequate to be used to convey divinely revealed truth.  We have a much better source for revealed truth than that offered by human reasoning or intellectualism.  Notice Paul characterizes philosophy as “vain deceit” or worthless lies.  I call philosophy the words of men.

Notice Paul touches on the traditions of men.  Paul attacks the Gnostic false teaching of secret knowledge as nothing more than the traditions of men.  Today, in religion, traditions of men are elevated above the teaching of God.  Religion and cults alike teach intellectualism as traditions handed down that are not found in the Bible.  Everything we need is in God’s Word, and Paul clearly says these traditions are rudiments or teachings of this world.  If you can’t find it in God’s Word – you can be sure it’s mans words or traditions.

The Problem – Ignoring The meaning of Christ’s Birth

Colossians 2:9-10 (KJB) “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: “

God’s answer for philosophy, vain deceit, traditions of men and the rudiments of this world is the “mystery of godliness” as Paul calls it.

1 Timothy 3:16 (KJB) “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”

Jesus Christ came to earth as a man in flesh and bones.  In Jesus lives all the fullness of the Godhead in flesh and bones.   There is no comparison between Jesus Christ and ANY religious leader, past, present or future.  When Jesus was born at Bethlehem He was set apart from any other men.  The truth of Jesus Christ cannot be said of anyone else.

John 1:14 (KJB) “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

The answer to the Gnostics mystery was Jesus Christ and the Godhead born in a body.  That same answer holds for the cults who elevate some man.

The Problem – Ignoring The mystery of Christ’s Birth

Colossians 2:9-10 (KJB) “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: “

Believers are a part of the Lord’s body.  Philosophy and traditions know nothing about that.  The truth of this statement is hard to grasp.  The cult offered secret knowledge to complete worldly intellectualism.  Paul says we are already complete in Him.  At best religious cults have nothing but worthless knowledge to offer.  At worst, they offer deep access to things from Satan and to forbidden secrets that will have eternal effects.

The Problem – Ignoring The majesty of Christ’s Being

Colossians 2:9-10 (KJB) “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

Paul does not deny the Gnostic claim of ranks among angels.  Paul simply declares that the Lord Jesus is the head of all such beings, good, bad, or fallen.  These principalities & powers rule over the earth as Satan’s pawns and yield great power.  When Jesus returns, He will overthrow the world empire (Isa. 24:21).

Conclusion – Human reasoning sounds clever, but when it ignores God, His Word, His Holy Spirit, and His Son, then it’s just foolishness.

1 Timothy 3:16 KJV1 Timothy 16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. 1 Timothy 3:16 KJV
