God is Always in the Midst Of His Own
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. (Matthew 18:20 KJV)
Some apply this verse exclusively to a gathering of people within the four walls of a church. However, we know from the book of Revelation there are churches, especially in these last days, where God is NOT present among an assembly.
This verse can be misused and abused to put God’s stamp of approval on a gathering together of like-minded people, both inside and outside of a properly established church. God set forth clear standards in His Word in the book of Acts as a pattern for a New Testament Church. Like-mindedness must be based upon core biblical principles rather than a gathered assembly based upon worldly ideas and the philosophy of man.
A gathering of God’s people can be located inside a church building, however, it can be an assembled group of people meeting together outside of a church too. Prayer meetings, evangelism, door to door witnessing, rallies, discipleship programs, church bus ministries, missionaries, special trips, and many more examples can consist of a group of people who are gathered together for bringing about God’s purpose and will.
