Herod Hears John
Mark 6:19-20 (KJB) Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not: 20 For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.
I think it is fair to say that if Herodias had it her way she would have wasted no time in killing John because of his personal accusations concerning the Truth against her.
Often that is the way it is with the truth. It stirs up hatred which fills the heart and consumes the mind. Hate does not automatically, or by osmosis, hand a person unrealized power or provide an opportunity for harming another. A person can make a choice to act upon the hostility that is bundled up inside them. Pent up frustration and hatred can be the fuel utilized in commiting heinous acts.
Herod saw the righteousness in John. He understood that John did not deserve to be treated in unjustly for what he spoke. John was not to be killed because Herodias had a quarrel with him about her immorality.
Herod knew that John was a man of God, listened to his words, and chose to spare his life.
