His Return Will Be Swift and Sudden
For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. (Matthew 24:27 KJV)
Lighting creates a brilliantly charged light show often complete with booming sounds of thunder in the sky. It can be both seen and heard for a great distance. Lighting is a powerful phenomenon, a marvel of nature, controlled by the hand of God.
A thunderstorm can pop up in the sky unexpectedly. Dark and ominous storm clouds gathering on the horizon often give us a clear indicator a powerful storm is brewing. However, lightning storms can and do simply pop up unpredictably in all four weather seasons. This is due to a series of natural events which generate an unstable atmosphere. A cold front and warm front meet up changing the weight and pressure of air significantly ushering in highly unstable air.
This scripture verse uses man’s familiarity with the power and nature of lightning storms to describe details of a great and anticipated spiritual event. There will be little notice, fanfare, or time set aside for a big announcement of the day of the coming of Jesus Christ in the clouds. His sudden coming will be in a time man does not expect, beyond what any man has ever imagined, and far more spectacular than any lightning storm.
It gives the regenerated man a familiar experience to build his hope upon as he waits for the anticipated arrival of Jesus Christ in the clouds ushering His spiritual family into the eternal realm.
