Joshua Had a Holy Visitor
And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? And the captain of the LORD’S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so. (Joshua 5:13-15 KJV)
Joshua was encamped near Jericho when he looked up to see what appeared to be either an angel or a pre-incarnate Jesus Christ. Joshua described this man as standing with a sword in his hand and who introduced himself as the captain of the host of the Lord.
Joshua was not sure who this man was. Whether he was working for the enemy or was a foe to Joshua and those around him. Certainly Joshua did not recognize this man outright as heavenly in nature because outwardly he seemed to be like any other man.
When this man introduced himself as:
“And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come…”
Joshua instantly fell to his face at once and began worshiping him as Lord.
Now, if this had been an appearance of an angel Joshua would have been forbidden to worship him. So it appears this was a visit from the Lord himself. No man would deserve worship like this from Joshua.
Joshua was commanded to remove his shoes because he was standing on holy ground and he was immediately obedient. None other, besides the Lord, would dare request this calling the ground around Him holy.
