Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears

1 Samuel 13:19-21 (KJB) Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears: 20 But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock. 21 Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.

There was no blacksmith found.  Imagine a group of men not being able to make any weapons.  Sounds like a fairy tale or some tall tale found in an old western movie with a bad ending coming soon.

However, this circumstance has been divinely recorded in God’s Word in these above verses!  The “no smith” refers to there being no blacksmith present in this ancient time. It was a time of no new weapons being crafted.

Why?

The Philistines had prevented the Hebrews from being able to create any weapons for ensuring their own safety.

But, the Jewish people simply resorted to preparing and sharpening all the weapons they already had by going down to the land of the Philistines.  These verses list several weapons including coulters, axes, mattocks, forks, and goads which the Israelites had stockpiled with wisdom in meeting their coming needs of war.

Perhaps this situation can be applied to these modern days in which we live.  Many nations keep a cache of various important weapons readily available while some nations prevent others from stockpiling certain kinds of weapons deemed detrimental to world peace.

God has all things, including wars and wrangling, under His command and control.  It is of the utmost importance for any nation and people to be found in agreement with God rather than found to be in opposition to His divine will and way.

In the end, weaponry is both maintained and controlled by the power and presence of God at work in this world.  Both mankind and nations are merely pawns in bringing about His will and way.  It is always better to be divinely used of God rather than being manipulated by the wicked intentions of mankind who is only evil continually.
