Man Cannot Rid Himself of the Dirt and Debris of Sin
When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation. (Matthew 12:43-45 KJV)
Jesus is clear in this scripture that it is not enough for man to sweep the cracks and crevices of his heart and mind to flee from the presence of evil by trusting in his own works. Man must willingly open his heart and mind to allowisthe presence of the Holy Spirit to cleanse him and fill him up with the very presence of God in his softened heart.
The verse teaches us that the unclean spirit came back to this same man who had worked and worked to clean his own mind and finding his house empty. This verse teaches us that the devil is anxious to fill man with his own brand of darkness and evil. It is never enough to “clean ourselves” of sin and spiritual bad habits. It takes the very presence of God dwelling inside of us to fill our hearts with His presence and nature and shuttering our hearts from being filled with “spiritual fluff” of satan.
The man attempted to “clean himself,” never yielding himself to the power and presence of God to work spiritually in the cracks and crevices of his thirsty heart.
