Man Is No Match For Evil Forces
Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. (Acts 19:13-16 KJV)
The power of the devil is nothing to take lightly. Yes, God is all-powerful and has already won the final victory. However, there are many dark forces at work in this world to confuse and derail God’s people from accomplishing His will in their life and falling prey to the dark will of the god of this world instead.
This verse in speaking of a group or band of vagabond Jews who were roaming about in the world using their methods; witchcraft, exorcism, or other pagan rituals in attempt to remove these dark forces from those people afflicted by dark spirits. Even the dark forces understood the methods these vagabonds were trying to use were to no avail against dark evil powerful forces; these forces even answering the roaming group’s attempt at removing them. The vagabonds tried to use the same method the Apostle Paul employed in successfully invoking the name of God to remove these dark spiritual forces.
The evil spirit knew who God was and who Paul was and what he used when removing the evil force from its hold on a person, but this evil did not know or recognize any attempts these gypsies used to eliminate the evil in the name of God. Evil quickly overtook These gypsies, and they were forced to flee away having been overpowered and traumatized in this unexpected turn of events.
One demon worked against a group of men who were trying to exercise power over it and was highly successful in overcoming them and creating spiritual havoc. This biblical example should serve us well to take note of the power of darkness and that mankind, acting without the supernatural power and will of God, is no match for demons.
The Apostle Paul invoked the name of God into the situation having use of God’s supernatural power through a relationship with God and having possession of supernatural powers given to His Apostles for use in accomplishing this spiritual feat in furthering the gospel message.
