Meet Mr. Crowley

Meet Mr. Crowley

Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJB) Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

As we have already uncovered and exposed for your contemplation, that God divinely desires to direct every way of a godly person’s heart including his choice of music.  However, many people foolishly choose to follow a more modern melodious musical track found at work inside in this world as well as waged inside many modern and mellow churches.  Yes, music plays a big entertainment role in contemporary pulpits and works subconsciously through the airwaves of this world to assault the ear gates of many unsuspecting souls.

Yes, choosing to follow a palatable and popular musical thoroughfare always offers the widest and easiest pathway to trek, includes dark lyrics often with a subliminal agenda, and a compromising sway or drift towards entertainment value rather than a godly motive of building up spiritual heart value by focusing on the power and purposes of God.

What, a subliminal message at work in many lyrics you might question?  Take the latest Volkswagen commercial for example.  It uses lyrics “I get high with a little help from my friends,” taken from a popular Beatles song which is sung by many artists.  Now many would say, perhaps including its authors, that the meaning of these lyrics has nothing at all to do with the use of drugs.  Maybe it truly does not have anything to do with illicit drug use, however, a person cannot discount the fact that hearing this message repeatedly can work to soften common thinking about getting high.  The truth is that whether a hearer pictures in his own mind about an uplifting friend(s) helping in a time of need or sees a drug user choosing to smoke a joint it is a thoroughfare for a message that plants a picture subliminally inside minds that should be of our highest concern.

It is true that many people in this world lack a healthy dose of God’s supernatural spiritual resistance for battling this crafty avenue od darkness amid the musical manifestations of satan because they are busy traveling along the wrong course in this world.  Choosing to be entertained with the likes of popular genres like rock and roll, country music, and so-called “Christian rock” with perhaps a slight “religious lean” is often popular and palatable with many seasoned ears and hearts of this world.  Yes, the proverbial grass is well worn on these typical pathways leading straight to ungodly rumbling and reverberating upon theatre-like stages in so-called churches and open for business in the musical machinations in this world.

Characters like Mr. Crowley, who I am going to introduce you soon, are always found reverberating along the bustling musical pathways of this world rather than found along God’s avenue.  The direction of travel for those hungering for biblical godly music, honoring and respectful of the eternal character of God, hinges on his or her spiritual heart condition.  A person agreeing with God and choosing to be obedient to His will rather than acclimating his own fleshly desires, will naturally seek that music which is pleasant and pleasing to God rather than the heart of a lost man.

Yes, a man or woman of God desires to be compliant with God’s will and direction in every area of life as he sojourns in this world.

The spiritual bottom line:  Finding God’s brand of music always entails walking upon an incredibly unpopular, unpopulated, and incredibly narrow pathway teeming with spiritual life which does exist in this world.

A heartfelt desire at work inside the heart of a man to travel in God’s fashionable spiritual direction is always based first and foremost upon having a personal relationship with Him, rather than based on upon any man’s own character or actions, such as being good and moral, or keeping a large assortment of rules and spiritual rigidity.  Desiring to follow a godly musical pathway is an impossible destination for any person to reach on his own effort, but always firmly rests upon the finished work of Calvary at work inside the heart of a child of God.

Now let get down to the “spiritual nitty gritty” about spiritually influencing people like Mr. Crowley and how it ties together with the clear message found in the above verse.  This verse directs us to look to God in all things, including our choice of music. Again, it is important to note that this verse says, “In all your ways…” speaking about the direction a child of God travels as he sojourns in this world. This verse clearly does not say for a child of God to spiritually savor and serve God only when he or she feels like it, or using their own “flavor of music.”  Or for a man to choose to serve God through the “right” music for a few hours every Sunday morning, then be fueled by satan’s musical machinations the rest of the week.  Neither does this verse say to allow ungodly contemporary music to have free reign inside a church house because it can draw a bigger audience.  Nor does it say to play your “favorite,” but dark music, in our own relaxing times, in our personal car, or inside our home when no other person can hear what kind of music you select to listen and relax to.

There is never a time any person will get away with attempting to fool God by having his secret dark musical preferences playing inside his personal music space, whether it be at work inside His church.

Maybe you are sitting on the proverbial fence of this world by choosing to disagree about certain popular genres of music being found as ungodly.  Maybe you continue to choose to cling to certain kinds of music because it stirs up cherished memories of a long time ago rather than hearing godly tunes allowing the Spirit of God to stir up a great peace and eternal comfort about the future by the playing of His godly brand of music.  You must understand that God may encourage a man to visit past spiritual lessons from time to time, but He never encourages His child to live within the walls of his sinful past, including anything to do with the use of ungodly music.

In fact, the Bible tells us that God gives His child a new song, not a continual replay of old music, in the God work of salvation inside his or her heart (Psalm 40:1-3).

Here are a few of many available examples of satan’s utter musical wickedness cleverly hiding and working inside the dark, but popular, musical lyrics.  Perhaps this unveiling of the presence of these utterly evil words with spiritually potent possibilities and grave intent will serve to open your eyes and your ears to better understand real dangers lurking inside satan’s dark musical manifesto.

So, first, let’s meet this man named Mr. Crowley.  His full name is Mr. Aleister Crowley.  He was an infamous Englishman who was really a British purveyor of black magic and boldly proud of it.  If that is not enough of an introduction or a bold enough discovery for you to revel about, contemplate further upon the fact that he was a man who once was intimately familiar with things of God.  Perhaps the case was that he had much head knowledge of God without any spiritual work taking place inside his heart.  For the truth is he chose to reject all fondness or have any remembrance of strict fundamental beliefs in God, introduced by his Bible-believing father, choosing to be a proudly professing Satanist.

The Bible does tell us once a house is swept clean, the second cluttering of this same house, or mind and heart, will certainly reveal an even greater presence of evil (Luke 11:23-25).  Now it is good to take note that darkness and evil cannot flourish inside a house, or a spiritual heart condition, that God eternally occupies.  However, a head and a heart that has been introduced to facts of God but does not desire for Him to dwell inside the heart is ripe for a resident dose of evil.

It has been said that one of Mr. Crowley’s deepest desires was to live outrageously and to be known by his evil desires.  He desired to have a name and a reputation that was clearly associated with evil.  In fact, he was working at a feverish pace in his early adult years with a pronounced goal to restore paganism in this world.  He flat out rejected anything to do with God, moving instead to label himself a prophet of Thelema, an evil occult, electing to trail straight into the dark musical ploys of satan.

Mr. Crowley did first attempt to further his education when he was fresh out of high school by attending a college in England.  It was indeed a school of higher learning, but he was subsequently and unofficially trained in many dark, but spiritually popular areas, including black magic.  He busied himself with this evil agenda, rather than striving for any kind of typical learning, or for having a socially successful career, as does often take place in the lives of many college students in his era, and found at work inside the lives of responsible graduates today.

Mr. Crawley professed that some strange mystical events had taken place in his life.  He used his dark experiences to write, mostly at first for releasing spiritually unflattering poetry, eventually published becoming popular among those friends who were comfortable living on the dark side of life.  Eventually, he left college without earning any kind of degree to pursue his own perceived, but dark, achievements continually leading him down a desperate, dark, and dreary pathway.

Certainly, this agenda, or manifesto, was far removed from the narrow pathway God had divinely prepared for his life.  God’s pathway always leads to light and life.

His widely published occultist beliefs led many astray.  Mr. Crawley wrote a book called “Magic in Theory and Practice” which influenced many spiritually ignorant or unsuspecting people to do follow him in doing things backward.  Yes, I said to do things backward! Certainly, many of you who are professing Christians understand that God always leads his children in a forward-facing direction (Proverbs 3:5-6) as satan repeatedly attempts to entice a man (1st Peter 5:8) into following him backward into a darkened, regressive, and spiritually wayward fashion.

It is true that satan is always moving in the opposing direction to that of God.

What does all this about Mr. Crowley have to do with the world of wicked music?  Mr. Crowley was known to have both influences in the writing of lyrics along with many social connections inside the world of music, especially with fellow Britain’s who were busy about performing in a new popular wave of rock and roll.  In fact, many performers looked to him as a hero, or as one who had a superstar status, especially among heavy rockers.  During his lifetime Mr. Crowley was connected to the likes of such rockers as Led Zepplin, The Beatles (his face even appearing on the cover of one of their records), David Bowie, Jimmy Page, and Ozzy Osbourne, who in fact along with another man in his band, wrote a popular song titled Mr. Crowley.  This is a song was written about him and his dark, but popular brand of strangeness.

It could be said that his dark spiritual poems and lyrics were used as a foundation to usher in a wicked parade of popular tunes that keeps exploding his brand of darkness yet today.

Please pay close attention to the spiritually sordid lyrics:

This song “Mr. Crowley,” was released on an album called “Speak of the Devil”:

Mr. Crowley, what went on in your head
Mr. Crowley, did you talk with the dead
Your life style to me seemed so tragic
With the thrill of it all
You fooled all the people with magic
You waited on Satan’s call
Mr. Charming, did you think you were pure
Mr. Alarming, in nocturnal rapport
Uncovering things that were sacred manifest on this Earth
Conceived in the eye of a secret
And they scattered the afterbirth
(solo)
Mr. Crowley, won’t you ride my white horse
Mr. Crowley, it’s symbolic of course
Approaching a time that is classic
I hear maidens call
Approaching a time that is drastic
Standing with their backs to the wall
Was it polemically sent
l wanna know what you meant
I wanna know
I wanna know what you meant

The words of this song are both dark and strange, indeed.  They ask a question of Mr. Crowley, “enquiring what did he mean?”  Noting that he was a very weird man who was hard to understand.  A man who enthusiastically both wrote and spoke about having a swastika birthmark and a purpose for scattering his afterbirth (as found plainly in the words of this song.)

There is a mention of riding a white horse.  Some say this reference is to his drug abuse.

Mr. Crowley was also the subject of another song “Accident of Birth” written by Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden which speaks of spirits from the tomb and of the nativity of Christ and His creation cast in a dark and evil light:
Journey back to the dark side, back into the womb
Back to where the spirits move like vapor from the tomb
The center of the cyclone, blowing out the sun
Break the shackles of your union to the light

I might’ve had a brother
As I was born, they dragged him under
To the other side of twilight
He’s waiting for me now

Nativity was lost on me
I didn’t ask, I couldn’t see
What created me
What and where and how

Welcome home – it’s been too long, we’ve missed you
Welcome home – we’ve opened up the gates
Welcome home – to your brothers and sisters
Welcome home – to an accident of birth

Feel our bodies breathing as you try to stop believing
There’s nothing you can do about your shadows
You can fight us, you are like us
And your body will betray you
Lay down and die like all the others

Where are the angels and their wings of freedom?
Jesus had his day off when they pulled you through…

Welcome home – it’s been too long, we’ve missed you
Welcome home – we’ve opened up the gates
Welcome home – to your brothers and sisters
Welcome home – to an accident of birth
(to an accident of birth)

Visions growing dim as the daylight fades away
A spinning twisting black hole it’s your dying day

Welcome home – it’s been too long, we’ve missed you
Welcome home – we’ve opened up the gates
Welcome home – to your brothers and sisters
Welcome home – to an accident of birth

Welcome home – it’s been too long, we’ve missed you
Welcome home – we’ve opened up the gates
Welcome home – to your brothers and sisters
Welcome home – to an accident of birth

There are many dark and twisted lyrics at work in this world beyond that of Mr. Crowley, including a dark song written about a vacillating man named Pilate.  Yes, Pilate, who was a leading authority figure in ancient biblical times who indeed dealt with allowing the innocent death of Jesus Christ.

The Rolling Stones sang a song about the vacillation of Jesus Christ.  It was not Jesus Christ who waffled about his coming but undeserved death, but a man named Pilate.  Take some time to ponder upon the biblical details which took place after Jesus Christ’s arrest and lead up to his death on the cross as recorded in God’s Word.  Then, read these lyrics presented below.  As you know from God’s Word, Jesus Christ was an innocent man who was sentenced to die because the unruly crowd desired His death and a ruler named Pilate waffled, giving into the crowds loud but unreasonable demand knowing it was not the truth of the situation.

Here is a biblical verse recorded about Pilate vacillation:

Matthew 27:24 (KJB) When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.

Do you know that in ancient times this kind of cruel death on a cross was reserved for the worst of the worst criminals?  Pilate attempted to maintain his own blamelessness while pushing forward with an undeserved verdict upon an innocent and blameless man, Jesus Christ.  Pilate, knowing full well that he was doing wrong, attempted to alleviate his guilt by “washing Jesus Christ’s innocent blood” off his hands.  Pilate chose to appease the unruly crowd reveling and ranting in favor of Jesus Christ’s death, even when he knew Jesus Christ was blameless.

Now that you are familiar with the truth and what God inspired to be recorded in His Word about the actual events after the arrest of Jesus Christ leading up to His Only Son’s death along with the “underhanded caving in of Pilate,” you can now begin to better understand the great evil and darkness found in the words of this song made popular in the seventies:

Sympathy for The Devil by The Rolling Stones:

Please allow me to introduce myself
I’m a man of wealth and taste
I’ve been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man’s soul to waste

And I was ’round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate

The very words inspired by God and recorded in the Bible strongly refute the words and characterization of the death of Jesus Christ presented in this song.  The truth is Calvary is way more than a brief period of doubt and pain humanly felt by Jesus Christ as he succumbed to death on the cross. It was not just a physical death but a sacrifice of God’s Only Son for the wages of all sin.  His death was accomplished out of a great enduring love and for the spiritual purpose of the permanent removal of sin.  Pilate was not a man of spiritual wealth or taste, he was a scared coward without any substance or spiritually strong bone found in his weak souled body.

Pilate was nothing more than a weak man who conceded, or waffled, to the loud roar of the popular crowd even when knowing that their pleas were intrinsically wrong.  Perhaps this characterization of Pilate reminds you of a few like-minded men of authority working darkness in this world today.

Perhaps you, like me, have heard this very song playing at least a time or two.  Maybe you are familiar with it, or like me only recognized it only as background music. The tune was familiar but you never really knew the words of the song, that is until now.  Perhaps you never truly understood the words being sung and especially connected with the spiritual magnitude of these words.

My jaw hung open as I really heard, for the first time, the words being sung.  Yes, these strong and spiritually profane words hit me right square in the face and made both my head and heart hurt.  These words entered my ear gate for many years without being checked or flagged.  Deadly lyrics such as these are a subtle way for evil words to enter in our heart and mind.  Believe me, dark words do not just sit idly upon finding an easy entry into our minds.  They worm and wiggle their way into the recesses of our mind and perhaps begin whittling away at the presence of truths of God.

Meeting up with a Woman Named Lola

The gender confusion circus is not something new brewing in this world today.  A song was written and released in the early seventies about a sexually confusing meeting between two people.  One person was a young man, and the other was potentially a transvestite dressed a woman, in the setting of a bar.  As a man dresses as a woman or vice versa, it leads to much strife, misperceptions, especially among people involved in such lewd relationships.

Here is a small portion of this song:

Well, I’m not dumb but I can’t understand
Why she walked like a woman but talked like a man
Oh my Lola, L-L-Lola, L-L-Lola

While there are much other evil and profuse lyrics at work in this world I could have chosen to lay out for your learning in this devotion.  Many written and performed about different “flavors of sin”, including the psychedelic effects from drugs and the level of euphoria plateaus reached in using them, those that promote violence and crime, sexual permissiveness, and glorify rebelling authority.  Certainly, as I have clearly shown in this devotion there are words with the sole purpose of cutting straight to the heart by attacking the power and presence of God and His Son as preserved in God’s Words recorded in the Bible.

These kind of vile spiritual attacks, as discussed and to be expected in the life of a child of God (Galatians chapter 6,) are found repeatedly in the lyrics of both rock and roll and rap music. Country music, as well, does contain many ungodly relational concepts, such as drinking, divorce, and the choice to dally in more subtle sin.  Listening to the wrong music can place a person in the wrong place at the wrong time and on the wrong path in this world but God can use these times as both judgment and for our greater learning.

Perhaps, even after reading this devotion which offers a glimpse into dark and evil music through the eyes of God, you may still choose to say that similar lyrics and more palatable rhythms, not outright vulgar, and perhaps even labeled “religious” or “Christian” is more spiritually congenial, serving no harm to the listener.  Nonetheless, you must understand for yourself, choosing to glamorize sin at any level is never palatable or pleasing to God.  The truth is choosing to enter any sin littered pathway via subtle words and tantalizing rhythm always serves to lead a man away from God to stand in opposition to things of God.  The wrong music always leads to dark avenues and dangerous places, filled with subtle threats and places of downright peril in this world.  The truth is that a genuine child of God desires to sojourn in this world living a life which is pleasing to God.  He or she readily choose to agree with the holiness and righteousness of God as he grows and matures in all things of Christ, this includes his or her choice of music.

The next devotion, the last one in this series, Satan’s Musical Manifesto, will reveal godly music available in ancient times and for us in worshipping and serving God today. Yes, there are biblically based hymns explicitly for the purpose of honoring and worshipping God.  The final devotion will be titled Worshipping and Praising God with Music
