Paul Sets Peter Straight
But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed. (Galatians 2:11 KJV)
Confrontation is not often a pleasurable thing to be involved in with another brother or sister in Christ. However, doing so can be spiritually necessary in keeping right and robust relationships with God and man. Confronting another plays a role in righting a situation headed in the wrong spiritual direction out of line with precepts and commandments of God.
This verse is speaking of a particular time when Paul felt it was absolutely necessary to confront wayward teachings of Peter. This was an incident Paul was not able to simply dismiss or “sweep under the rug” because Peter was conforming to ways of man, rather than standing firm upon truths of God.
Peter was imparting wrong doctrine about Jews and Gentiles. Paul could not allow Peter to give greater weight and credence to thoughts and teachings of man concerning the Law and grace made available for both Jews and Gentiles.
The truths of God do not fluctuate or change with contrary winds blowing about this world. Truth is always based upon God’s immutable standards and any teaching that conforms to the thinking of man, rather than God, must be pointed out and properly dealt with.
