Living in submission to God is the opposite of living in enmity to the things of God according to the world’s values.
Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: (1 Peter 2:13-15 KJV)
Submission is an integral part of living the Christian life. One must understand what submission is according to God’s Word and not in relation to a modern definition of submission in this world. Man’s definition of submission is an oppressive weight or authority which is smothering of freedoms. This definition is from the standpoint of the world which is spiritually out of bounds and not functioning in harmony to biblical standards.
This worldly definition is often used to illustrate an abusive relationship, most often a marriage relationship, where likely woman, but could also be a man are restricted by another who is in control from living according to their own belief system, ideas, or choices because of an overbearing or domineering spouse who demands authority over or living in submission to their way first and foremost, which is the opposite of the true definition of submission according to God’s Word.
Submission to God and sin reside at opposite ends of the spiritual spectrum; one leading closer to God and the other lining up with darkness of the god of this world. Submission to the things of God works in conjunction with the pricking of The Holy Spirit in our heart keeping God’s spiritual family moving along with spiritual momentum along His narrow pathway according to His commandments and precepts.
Sin, on the other hand, leads man onto a widened pathway which is crooked, unordered, and chaotic. A lifestyle filled with poisonous relationships, rampant sin, and plunged into unrelenting depths of darkness. Man is either in submission to God’s Word filled with His peace and joy; or living in submission to sin and the god of this world and filled with sin, contention, and strife.
Satan has a counterfeit spiritual agenda built upon the foundation of darkness and evil found thriving in this world. Those who are in submission and obedience to the god of this world not living in spiritual orderly fashion to the things of God are tossed about carelessly by the winds of turmoil and storms bearing heavily down upon their life and devoid of any lasting peace and joy.
The Bible tells us living in submission to His will and way brings about a lasting peace and orderly fashion to our life:
For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace. (James 3:16-18 KJV)
Submission is addressed in the Bible as a commandment of living godly and holy lives unto God foremost then in according to authority of mankind biblically.
The Bible does speak of specific situations of life; including citizens living under the authority of leaders of government, authority in marital relationships, ancient biblical relationships bound by slavery in history, and other relationships with an appointed leader or authority which falls in alignment under the authority of God.
