There are spiritual traps, persecutions, and desert-like conditions but God is always near.
Our persecutors are swifter than the eagles of the heaven: they pursued us upon the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness. (Lamentations 4:19 KJV)
I have had the great pleasure of watching large groups of eagles gracefully flying through the air and coming into coast upon the water for fish just underneath the surface of the water. Eagles are graceful and beautiful birds with a wide and powerful wing span to quickly swoop down from great heights in the sky to wrestle fish and other delicacies out of the water for their eating pleasure.
Some of our enemies, just like evil kings and armies in Old Testament times, seem to be just as graceful and swift; swooping down into our life along the narrow path waiting for opportunities to harass us. These scavengers are more like vultures desiring to bring spiritual persecution, trials, and tribulations to our life as we sojourn in this world following the will of God for our life.
Some times in spiritually dry seasons of life we may be found out in a desert away from the things of God. Like the Prodigal Son who desired for himself that which was not the will of God we too can be led away and captive to things in this world for a time. Our enemies swoop down hastily with evil intent keeping us from realizing the errors of our way inhibiting our inclination to refocus our heart and mind centered upon the things of God.
The Bible has many examples of biblical spiritual giants who spent time in the desert but never permanently away from the hand of God who always intimately knows our heart and spiritual condition.
