Are you living with your spiritual eyes wide open?
Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. (Psalms 119:18 KJV)
How well can you see? Man is born with naturally limited vision. His eyes are opened at birth to the things of this world. He can take in things with his eye gate based in this world but he is naturally blinded to seeing and understanding spiritual things of God.
Any man who does not personally know God is blind to things of a spiritual nature. For those who have been born of God having a new spiritual nature means they have chosen through faith to set aside all things from the god of this world putting on a new nature of Christ being illuminated spiritually. This new nature allows him to see the things of God. It is enabling his spiritual vision to color the world with God’s viewpoint rather than mankind’s flawed view.
This illumination is a once quickening spiritual enlightenment as well as a process over time. It is a continual fine tuning or discernment bringing greater spiritual understanding as man grows in in fellowship with God. David is calling out to God in this verse for greater spiritual discernment and a fuller understanding from God according to His law as he walked in fellowship with Him. Often we must call out to God to give us greater understanding in this Age of Grace as we sojourn in this world.
For the believer growing and maturing in God is a lifetime process as he sojourns on this earth. Today we have God’s Word we can hold in our hand, hide it in our heart, and view it in His nature; gleaning greater understanding. In David’s time they had words and the law from God recorded on scrolls and stones, spoken from the mouths of prophets, in nature, and from dreams or visits from angels sent by God.
