What treasures are you gathering those having eternal significance or the fleeting trinkets of this world?
I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts. So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me. And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour. Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 2:8-11 KJV)
Solomon surrounded himself with the best of the best. He was affluent and able; having the means to surround himself with whatever his eyes and heart desired. Solomon accumulated many earthly treasures; anything his eyes desired but yet he never found lasting satisfaction from any of these earthly objects.
Many people follow this same crooked thinking as they course through their life on this earth; dwelling amidst things of this earth as they place much of their time and attention on things which have no lasting eternal value forgoing any accumulation of eternal riches. Often earthly possessions are stacked up in the corners of their life having lost their once shiny façade or satisfaction to quiet fleshly yearnings and they are forgotten left to waste away in this world as spiritual matters are given little or no importance in day to day living.
The world seeks gratification and fulfillment in life from actions, works, and careers as well as hoarding trinkets. Many seek satisfaction in their day to day careers and jobs rather than a daily commitment to the things and priorities of God. Only the things of God give lasting eternal fulfillment and hope for the future.
Solomon learned important eternal precepts as he sojourned upon this earth; changing his view of the things of God as he matured both physically and spiritually.
Are you seeking fulfillment in the things of God or amassing great earthly treasures that never satisfy internal spiritual longings? Solomon amassed great earthly treasures on this earth but as he matured found them to be of no profit in light of God and eternity.
