Do you have spiritual momentum?
Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:13-14 KJV)
Paul readily admits he has not yet arrived. He sees himself clearly as a man who committed great sin which was in enmity to the things of God. He is man who made the choice, when boldly confronted by God upon the Damascus Road, to live whole heartedly for God; handing over his past sins to God to be buried in the deepest sea never to be fished out from this deep water again.
Paul is now living in continual forward momentum, using an analogy of a long distance race, illustrating his striving towards an eternal presence with God while sojourning upon this earth; bringing to pass God’s promise of eternal rewards into clear view when he crosses the finish line into the heavenly realm upon his physical death.
For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:20-23 KJV)
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. May you know the joy of the Lord all year long.
