This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. (Titus 1:13-14 KJV)
Can you find a truthful witness?
“This witness is true…” A truthful witness is hard to find these days as false teaching runs rampant even among many professing Christians. The truth is often melded and blended together with false doctrine making it hard for the average Christian, with dust accumulating upon their Bible, to properly discern between truth and error.
Titus had to deal with much false doctrine and it is the sad state of Christianity today as well. Many people who profess Jesus Christ from their lips do not hold fast the Words of Christ and bury them within their mind and heart. It is by His Word that we prove the spirit of man’s teaching; whether it comes from a dark spirit or is illuminated with the light of His Truth. We are to test the spirits as we digest all teaching and preaching. Those teachings which do not stand up to the truth of His Word are proven false and must be rebuked sharply. Any teacher or preacher who persists, after correction, in spreading false teaching and abiding in laws instead of truth must be separated from lest many be carried away by deception.
False doctrines and legalism, left to sow among the brethren, will work to stir up division and evil schemes of the god of this world to confuse and confound those who are spiritually unschooled or babes in Christ being spoon fed the milk of truth and not further prepared to digest the meat of deeper truths of God’s Word.
If you carelessly permit your ears to be dialed in to the teaching of false doctrine it quickly permeates your mind and trickles down to your heart. A mindset is developed that contains a bit of truth with a bunch of powerless filler and fluff. This is how many begin the descent of compromising the truth of God; settling for something glittery but spiritually diluted and weak which sounds good unless duly compared to the Truth of God’s Word.
This scripture, along with many in the New Testament, speaks of those who teach biblically unsound principles and unscriptural doctrine which sounds like the truth and should serve as a wakeup call for spiritual diligence and rebuke as necessary.
