2 Timothy 2:22 (KJB) Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
Timothy, Paul’s friend and brother in Christ was a young respectable man. The Bible tells us his mother Lois and his grandma Eunice (2 Timothy 1:5) raised Timothy up in great faith in God.
Paul was using a “teachable moment” with Timothy for highlighting the importance of fleeing wicked lusts which naturally rage and war in our flesh. This instruction was something important, it could not be mentioned too often to every young man and woman, then or today, as all mankind faces many tough spiritual battles because of their wicked flesh.
Paul had come beside Timothy, perhaps in the absence of a father whose presence was not mentioned, for taking an interest in encouraging and guiding him for living with a pure heart set aside for God. Not only did Paul have an interest in the spiritual quality of Timothy’s life as he matured into an adult but was led to use him in his traveling ministry.
This budding friendship between Paul and Timothy is a great example for men in the church and in the missionary field to follow in encouraging young men to secure their salvation in God and growing and maturing in His godliness in this world today.
Timothy was a spiritual brother, travel companion, and close friend of Paul. He was often found serving on the trail alongside Paul as they carried out God’s ministry. Paul often looked out for Timothy’s spiritual best interest including continual maturity and growth in his personal walk with God.
