What Fruit Do You Yield?
For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. (Luke 6:44 KJV)
Jesus Christ is speaking here in an accustomed language to those gathered around them so they might hear the message He had for their heart. He knew these people were intimately familiar with farming and growing crops. It was necessary to be a successful farmer for their own personal survival.
Jesus uses an illustration involving trees, knowing that if a man plants an olive tree it is only possible olives that are harvested from that tree. It is not possible to plant a mandrake tree and produce a crop of olives.
The same thing happens in our own spiritual lives. We cannot choose to exist in the midst of sinful circumstances and expect to reap a bountiful crop of lush spiritual fruit. Whatever crop we sow, that is what we harvest.
Figs begat figs and grape vines begat grapes.
If you allow sin to flourish in your life it will, without a doubt, produce corruption. Likewise, sowing to your new spiritual nature will bring forth a harvest of good spiritual works bringing honor and glory to God.
