And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. (Luke 1:26-35 KJV)
The Angel Gabriel was sent by God to speak of great news to a chosen virgin named Mary. Mary was not just any woman but was a woman who was handpicked and highly favored by God to carry the infant Jesus Christ in her virgin womb to bring about His earthly birth in this world. This was a significant piece of news delivered personally to her by the angel this day.
Mary was single, but spoken for by Joseph, they were engaged and about to be married. She had never been with a man and was alarmed at the news that she was with child and would give birth to a son who was to be called Jesus. Mary did not yet understand exactly how or why her womb had been divinely made with child, through the supernatural power of God, rather than being conceived in natural fashion like all other babies born on this earth.
Gabriel the angel was sent to bring both Mary and Joseph divine understanding of this supernatural event about to commence in their life.
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. (Matthew 1:20 KJV)
This was a special spiritual event which was both unexpected and unheard of before in this world. It was necessary for God to provide enlightenment to this young couple who were about to fulfill prophecy, and share in parenting of a divinely conceived and spiritually perfect child, Jesus who was to be born soon upon this earth.
Even in the Old Testament book of Job 14:4, Job understood that all children born in this world were born with a sinful heart condition from birth. Mary was to give birth to a son who the Bible says the angel Gabriel described to her as: “He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest…” This child was to be special and different.
A popular Christmas song among many today asks us to contemplate upon some prodding questions about this spectacular birth event mentioned in scripture verses Luke chapter 1:26-35. The song asks us to consider what did Mary know about her divinely conceived son who was to be named Jesus upon his birth?
The words of this popular song Mary Did You Know written by Mark Lowery:
Mary did you know that your baby boy Would someday walk on water?
Mary did you know that your baby boy Would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy Has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered Will soon deliver you.
Mary did you know that your baby boy Will give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy Will calm a storm with His hand?
Did you know that your baby boy Has walked where angels trod?
When you’ve kissed your little baby Then you’ve kissed the face of God.
Mary, did you know? Mary, did you know?
The blind will see, the deaf will hear The dead will live a-gain
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak The praises of the Lamb.
Mary, did you know that your baby boy Is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy Will one day rule the nations?
God’s Word does give us answers to these questions which seem to poke and prod at our heart as we listen and linger over the lyrics of this song.
Lyrics: Mary did you know that your baby boy Would save our sons and daughters? Did you know that your baby boy Has come to make you new? This child that you’ve delivered Will soon deliver you. Mary, did you know that your baby boy Will one day rule the nations?
Yes! Mary did know for the angel Gabriel was directed by God to tell Mary how God was going to use her life to bring about The Ruler of the nations, the Son of the Highest who would rule forever:
“He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end…”
Mary was a lot like you and I. We personally know God, we desire to serve God, and we know about the supernatural power of God, but we cannot ever comprehend or understand every spiritual detail or immutable characteristic about Him and His work in us and through us as we sojourn in this world. God is infinite, while we are human and limited or finite in our comprehension of Him, from this side of heaven.
It takes faith to walk with God.
Mary had the supernatural visit of the Angel Gabriel to communicate God’s plan for her life.
Today we have God’s Word which was inspired to be recorded and is preserved by God (Psalm 12:6-7) for us to study and apply God’s will to our life.
When man comes into a completed spiritual relationship with God in the eternal realm he will understand fully all things of God he now accepts by faith.
