A Crooked Election Campaign
Judges 9:2-4 (KJB) Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh. 3 And his mother’s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother. 4 And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him.
If you think that crooked elections are something new at work today in this world, you are wrong. In these verses, we read about Abimelech, who filled the minds of people with what he wanted them to know and believe and then purchased their following and support — setting up for himself a kingdom and an influential position in this world.
Abimelech conspired with the Shechemites to become king and bought his position. His crooked ambitions led to his reign of being king over the people. He purchased his kingdom, and perhaps as history records that his reign was not in alignment with the will and way of God.
Any person can use financial means and influence to buy their way into governance and politics. However, wealth means, and lasting success is never secure for God always has the upper hand, involving position and leadership, especially when involving the governing of regenerated hearts.
