A Divided Person
James 1:8 (KJB) A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
This short verse schools us in dealing with a person who is not spiritually stable. This verse describes a person split between serving the Lord and following his flesh and in imitating the god of this world. Such a person is both double-minded and unstable in all his dealings. He or she may profess to have a personal relationship with God; however, his or her actions and speech leave room for questions concerning the viability of the salvation of his or her heart.
Indeed, you know that only God can determine the spiritual condition of the heart for any person. Though when a sincere child of God notices flagrant doublemindedness and instability, he or she must look for fruit production and have a concern about obvious questionable life choices. Why? So that any spiritual uncertainty has no chance to rub off or mar his innocent standing before God.
A divided person cannot stand blameless before God and can act as yeast in dough, which can grow to infect others innocently gathered in the immediate vicinity. Spiritual steadfastness is why we must allow this verse to serve as a warning concerning those who praise God on Sunday and choose to “cuss like a sailor” Monday through Friday. Each person must make a mental note to witness and pray for any person who gathers in church on Sunday and lives like the world the rest of the week.
A noticeable rift or crevice between God and another heart is a sure sign of a spiritually weak relationship with God. Or even worse, perhaps salvation is not present in such a wayward soul. Only God can tell the difference between lazy Christians and lost hearted souls. Therefore, we must be careful in our relationships with others by choosing to identify with Christ and to sow seeds of His gospel message.
