A Great Fish
Jonah 1:17 (KJB) Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
Many of you have likely witnessed a whale swimming and playing in the ocean from the safety of a nearby boat. Jonah had an experience with a whale or a similar ancient mammal, in a manner that was way more upfront and personal, than simply viewing it from a safe distance.
Not only did Jonah see a whale, but he ended up being swallowed by this whale and spending three days inside its belly. This was certainly a supernatural event that had God’s signature written all over it. God worked divinely in preparing this whale for furthering the gospel message.
Some critics would even venture to say that this was not an actual event but a story crafted to display the power and presence of God. But, keep in mind that it certainly did happen, or God would not have divinely included it in His Word.
Yes, there is a spiritual significance to Jonah spending three days and three nights inside this whale. It was a spiritual event, a prophesy, and a picture of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ which was to soon come.
