A Look Ahead
John 16:20 (KJV) Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
Jesus is talking to His disciples. He alludes to a particular moment yet to come shortly. However, His comments concerning this coming evet are not understood by the disciples, at least that is until later. Isn’t it true hindsight is more apparent than any cloudy moment in this life?
Weeping, lamenting, and joy all must have seemed utterly strange and confusing to these men in this moment of ancient history. How could both sadness and joy fit together, and how and why would their current sorrow turn into joy? Yes, looking ahead can be difficult, especially since humans have a limited view of the future on this earth.
However, Jesus Christ was pointing to His own death and resurrection from the grave. His words would fit together like a well-oiled gear in the minds of these men shortly after the supernatural events of His crucifixion and rise again to life take place.
Yes, Jesus was looking ahead, but these men, His inner circle, were looking about them to understand what they could see in their today. Once the upcoming events Jesus Christ spoke of did occur, and His words rang true, this amazed these men as His words became specific supernatural events.
