John 18:30 (KJB) They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.
“If he were not a malefactor…” this was the specific motive given by Jewish leaders about their insight and reasoning for delivering Jesus Christ over to be crucified. They labeled Him a malefactor. This means they labeled Him criminal though He was innocent of any crime.
Nobody, according to the law, could rightly lay a hand on Jesus Christ, let alone sentence Him to death. This was unheard of that a man would be hung for crimes who was innocent. Secondly, He was a Roman citizen and this fact sheds a whole new light upon this precarious situation.
The Roman government and the Jewish officials were not on the best of relationship terms and the livelihood of Jesus Christ was divinely caught in the middle of this political and personal tug of war.
However, His willingness to die was according to the divine purpose of God since the beginning of time.
God can use both the wiliness of godly along with the evil nature of ungodly men all for bringing about His perfect will. Nails did not hold Jesus Christ to the cross, love, and obedience was the special spiritual glue that fulfilled the will of God.
