John 12:16 (KJV) These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.
A Stop In The Road
Every person comes to this stop on the road at some point in their life. The same is true for these disciples who halted in their tracks as their memory jolted about who is Jesus Christ. When they were in the moment, and Jesus Christ was standing near them, these men were not able to comprehend all that He taught. However, after Jesus’s death, His words took on a whole new meaning as His knowledge reverberated in their mind and heart.
The truth is that most people do not recognize who God is the first time they hear about Him. Indeed, you understand that hearing about God is not the same as identifying with Christ and choosing to apply His power and presence to will and work in the heart. These disciples were no different than many souls today. What they heard with their ears did not travel the short distance to their heart. That is until they were able to understand and apply truth, and doing so immediately changed their outlook and lives as they realized the magnitude of what Jesus had taught them in His short ministry and death on this corrupt earth.
When these men, and others, witnessed the death, burial, resurrection, and then Him gloried, they able to piece together the gospel message Jesus Christ had spoken and then after could recognize Him and apply the magnitude of His Words in their lives. These men were stunned and humbled concerning the truth about God and His Son, Jesus Christ, as the truth dawned on them post-Calvary.
