Alcohol Leads To Woes

Genesis 9:20-23 (KJV) And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard: He drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness.

This inspired account recorded in God’s Word does not tell us precisely what happened to Noah in his drunken sleeping stupor, but we can gather this event was life-changing for Noah and his youngest son, leaving permanent scars upon both of their lives.

We can know from the inspired scripture from God a few notable things, including:

One, that alcohol is something we should stay away from, for no good thing will come of drinking. Alcohol has caused many family and marital issues throughout time.  It causes people to do something they would not normally do if it were not for their inebriated state.

Two, whatever took place was a disgrace and brought shame to Noah and his youngest son.

Three, because of this incident involving alcohol, the Bible tells us that Noah’s son Ham was cursed.  This curse means that the consequences of this day have lasting effects.  See, when a person sins, it affects him or her and other people surrounding him.  Even strangers can be affected in some way by the sin of another.  Alcohol always affects others.

Four, reading a bit further in this chapter, beyond verse twenty-three, tells us Noah’s other sons, Shem and Japheth, were blessed because they appropriately handled this incident.  This information tells us that his sons all made a decision about what to do with Noah this night,  with Ham making a poor choice, a sinful choice in this incredibly dark moment in time.

Though God does not spell out precisely what happened, the emphasis is placed on Noah’s poor judgment in drinking alcohol, his younger son’s ill choice in a dark moment, and blessings for his other two sons’ in making sound choices.  Finally, you can bet that alcohol brings personal demise.  Alcohol leads to woes, and  God records many other scripture verses to warn us about drinking alcohol.
