Revelation 1:18 (KJV) I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.
This verse is rich in theology. It is the very words spoken by Jesus Christ and printed as red in some bibles. These words are essential for us to read and to comprehend concerning Jesus Christ.
First, they point to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Reminding us that He, Jesus Christ was alive with God at the beginning of time, physically died on the cross at Calvary for our sin, and arose to live forever with God.
Especially to note, this verse points us to His perpetual position and power. It is Jesus Christ who holds the keys to hell and death. No person can pass from this life on earth without God and His Son Jesus Christ, knowing about or allowing it to happen. Though a doctor may save a life on this earth in a hospital setting, it is God who provides the power, whether the physician recognizes God’s power and His presence in such matters or not. Or a person may choose to take their life in some fashion of suicide; it is Jesus Christ who allows such an event to take place or for a life saved through medical and social intervention.
Lastly, Jesus Christ holds satan’s angels in chains until such time He releases them to wreak havoc on this world. Oh, what would we do without His divine power and presence at work in this wicked world?
And do not forget, the best part of all, personally, knowing Him allows any softened soul to live with Him forever.
I hope reviewing this verse gives you a greater understanding and appreciation of the power and presence over life and death that God and His Son, Jesus Christ, hold. Nothing happens on this earth or in eternity without Jesus Christ knowing and allowing it to happen.
