“And Called Their Name…”
Genesis 5:2 (KJV) Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.
Their name, in this verb, hints at Adam as a plural, but wait, Adam is one man, you may say.
If you are like me, God naming the first man Adam is set in your mind. This naming is both known and true, no matter whether you are talking to sincere professing Christians or lost souls. From an early age, it is taught the first man was named Adam by God, and we have no reason to question the accuracy of this, for it is for our learning in the beginning chapters of God’s Word.
However, as we read here, God called them, plural, Adam. Woe, noticing this plural here is a bit astonishing to comprehend. But, think for a minute that God took a rib from Adam and formed Eve. So, in essence, God did create both Adam and Eve in this one day.
Noting both singular and plural is crucial to understanding the correct context of God’s Word. God did not place any words reluctantly in the Bible, and each included term, verb usage, names, times, etc. mean something important, or God would not have included the terms as He did in the canon of scripture.
Yes, on this first day that Adam is created, God used the term “them” in describing Adam as the first man of this earth. God referred to Adam with the plural ‘them,” indicating it was more than one person, interesting reading and study indeed!
