Cancer Harms Man from the Inside Out
Galatians 5:9 (KJB) A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.
This is the latest devotion in our Spiritually Fit Heart Series. Today we will examine both physical and spiritual cancer and the demise it can bring to both physical and spiritual life.
Cancer can be both physically and spiritually malicious. It can literally eat away at the strength, stature, and well-being of a person. Cancer can be detrimental to one’s health ushering in physical death. Cancer damages the livelihood of a person launching first at the cellular level moving swiftly forward to injure or destroy the health of a person literally from inside out.
The presence of Cancer can often sneak around inside a person’s body undetected. Some types can remain dormant in the body for a time. Others immediately begin a destructive course of action to disrupt, attack and decline the physical health of various areas of the body including organs, bones, soft tissues, and body systems.
Physically speaking, cancer is a serious health matter. It warrants extreme medical measures, new and powerful medicine, and certainly the necessity of prayerfully seeking miraculous answers from God to disrupt the downward spiral of physical dysfunction and decay to one’s health. Often it seems fighting cancer is fighting a horrible losing battle. It is hard to see cancer eat away at the life of a loved one. Even treatments prescribed for the preservation of life can bring additional setbacks and mounting health concerns.
Sadly, it often it seems like cancer patients are caught up in a vicious circle of deterioration and decline without an end in sight.
Spiritually speaking, the nature of “spiritual cancer” rapidly invades and spreads throughout the heart, mind, and soul of a professing Christian. Leaven is an ingredient which is minor in quantity but can work itself quickly through the entire lump of dough, causing a whole loaf of bread to react and expand and rise in the pan.
Leaven is an illustration of how spiritual cancer, even in tiny increments, will multiply, invade, and attack the heart condition of a child of God.
Yes, indeed, a little unsuspecting spiritual error or a “socially accepted” act of disobedience can spread and multiply to affect many unsuspecting souls.
Leaven was first introduced in ancient biblical times as an ingredient used in bread and alcohol and was used by God to illustrate the deft work of sin and false teaching which can quickly impair and clog one’s spiritual life. Incidentally, it is important to note that the bread from heaven given divinely by God to the Israelites as they marched on towards the promised land was without leaven.
Just as God is without sin.
Did you know that in ancient biblical times, there was punishment served up for anyone who chose to eat leaven during certain times, or for even choosing to store it in their home during the days the feast of the unleavened bread was observed (Exodus 12:19-20).
It was never “spiritually couth” to offer God leaven, or sin, in ancient biblical times. Sin has always been offensive to God and is to be avoided.
Sin is a serious matter, especially when found at work in the life of a professing Christian. Stern measures, as is necessary for treating rotting physical health, are used in disrupting the cycle of spiritual cancer, or leaven, at work in the soul of mankind.
Sin is offensive to God and mankind cannot offer “sin laced” sacrifices to God or have a spiritual heart condition which is circling the drain of life. Just as man cannot physically survive with seriously compromised functions of vital organs and systems necessary for maintaining vibrant physical health.
God desires and deserves sweet-smelling sacrifices to His nostrils. Not something which is odoriferous and spiritually offensive and insulting to Him.
Leaven, or sin, works like a “spiritual cancer” to eternally offend God!
The truth is many people, unsaved and professing Christians alike, both today and in ancient history, are living as an offense to God. They literally have the stench of sin about them! God does not take sin sitting down. In fact, He has and always will stand strong against the offensiveness of sin.
The Bible tells us that God will choose to turn a person over to the repercussions of his sin after an unspecified period of time.
Paul recorded this:
1 Corinthians 5:5-6 (KJB) To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
Spiritual cancer can inhibit or prevent closeness in man’s personal relationship with God. It can also destroy any possibility of fellowship with God, both now and for all eternity. That is why man must separate from sin, seek serious spiritual measures, and cling to the supernatural power and way of God rather than his own human reasoning.
Physical cancer can destroy the body and can swiftly usher in physical death. To preserve physical life cancer must be eradicated from man’s tent of flesh.
Spiritual cancer must be purged from the spiritual heart condition of mankind to sanctify the man and woman of God.
1 Corinthians 5:7-8 (KJB) Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: 8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
A new lump or a new supernatural life brings newfound eternal “spiritual stability.”
Refreshed and renewed physical health and recovery brings constancy or homeostasis to one’s physical health. It is like receiving a ray of sunshine for those who have suffered great physical erosion and decline from the grips of cancer.
