Contrite Before God
Ezra 9:5-7 (KJB) And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God, 6 And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens. 7 Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great trespass unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.
Shame and blushing, two things that seem to all but have disappeared from hearts in this world.
One look at ancient times, and many will agree that sincere repentance before God has all but ebbed in this world. Instead of contrition, many choose to raise in a prideful stance against God today.
Pride stands in opposition to God. It is the opposite of a spiritual heart stance softened towards God.
In these verses from the book of Ezra above, the prophet Ezra speaks about heaviness in the heart. This weight was from harboring the presence of sin rather than coming spiritually clean before God. The same is true to this day- sin left to wallow in a heart cause undue strain and heaviness of heart.
Coming before God and crying out to Him concerning the presence of sin opens a spiritual relief valve of sorts (1st John 1:9). Confessing sin to God and finding relief from sin and shame allows a person to remove this impending dead weight and replace it with a spiritual light heart and forgiveness of God.
Contrition before God removes the weight of sin and shame and replaces it with the lasting power and presence of God. This necessary release of guilt and divine cleansing gives each spiritually soft-hearted person what he needs to be fruitful in this world and forever.
