Corruption and False Counsel Hurled Against Stephen

Acts 6:11-14 (KJB) Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God. 12 And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council, 13 And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law: 14 For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.

False claims began to stack up against Stephen.  Because these bribed men could not find any real claims to stick on him, they pummeled Stephen with a host of false claims.  Just like Jesus was falsely accused, so was Stephen.

This is a favorite trick of the devil.  If he cannot find real evidence to hurt a man of God, he will elect to fling lies and deceit about him out in a public arena.  The world was corrupt in these ancient times in which Stephen lived just as it is today.  These dredged up claims against Stephen were made to stick even though they had no real merit in his case.

A crowd can be fickle.  One moment a group can be in stout agreement with you and in the very next moment they can operate in swift opposition to you.  This unruly crowd was against the truths of God and His messenger Stephen from the get-go.  They worked to stir up more and more people to stand in opposition against Stephen.  As soon as they were able they brought him in to stand before the court.

This court was hung in favor of the crowd rather than being a place serving justice where Stephen could be heard fairly.  This court was stacked against him from the start and it was not long before Stephen was accused of speaking lies and speaking blasphemously.  This charge held against him was a serious crime brought against Stephen by men who had been bribed to convict him of a crime he did not commit.

Stephen was a man of God who spoke the truth.  Because the crowd operated against him he was falsely accused.  He was charged with the serious crime of blasphemy.  Just like the world was pitted against Jesus in bringing false accusations against Him, they did the same to this child of God named Stephen.
