Coveting Is Natural to Lost Hearts
Hebrews 13:5 (KJV) Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
Here is another verse of scripture with a “bite.” It reveals the truth that we are to be content in our current state of affairs. Not only that, but we are to speak in kindness towards others and about other people’s situations, not choose to gossip, to backbite, or to covet what another possesses.
In this season of giving and receiving, God tells us that we are not to desire what other individuals have. Ouch, that’s hard to follow in the Christmas season.
In fact, this directive is so hard that many people find themselves desiring that which they have not the means to afford, to the point of making themselves physically and or mentally sick, or choosing to defy laws to steal, putting their hands on whatever it is they want at any cost.
The real point of giving and receiving that God reveals is for us to be content with what we have been given, especially the knowledge that God will always provide or us and to us as He deems fit. You see, it is natural for regenerated hearts to be thankful for their state of affairs and with whatever they have, while it is natural for lost souls to desire that which they do not have.
Let us not get so carried away with any holiday giving and receiving of gifts that we take on a world-based attitude by making the giving and receiving of gifts of greater importance than the birth, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ.
