Creator, Savior, and Sustainer
Up Close and Personal with the Apostle Paul Series
The Book of Colossians – Creator, Savior, and Sustainer
The Believer is Complete in Christ. He needs nothing that God has not supplied for his spiritual well-being. You see, God provided all things, He created, He provided, He fashioned, He formed, He shaped. God gave us all things for his blessing and for our spiritual benefit. Paul expands on all these marvelous things including highlighting The Creator God, the Savior God, and God the Sustainer in this Bible book of Colossians.
This letter is written to the Colossi Church in Rome. Though Paul himself never visited this congregation personally, he was informed of the state of the church and hearts from a fellow named Epaphras, a prisoner with him at Rome. It was Epaphras who reached these faithful serving hearts in the congregation of this Colossi church with the gospel message through the working of The Holy Spirit prior to his incarceration. This same Spirit was at work in the Apostle Paul as he penned this letter to them, meant for edifying and encouraging their faith-filled hearts. Paul also mentions Timothy, a young friend, preacher, mentor, and fellow brother in Christ who was a serving member of this church.
The Apostle Paul penned this book filled with such compelling Christology for breaking down the nature and fullness of God, This is despite the situation at work in Paul’s life as he was incarcerated prison at the time. It serves as a great indicator of the state of his heart, where he found his strength, and certainly the magnitude of the supernatural power and presence of God both present in this world and working in his heart and mind.
Paul starts this book out much like he did all the others in stating his authority and position in Christ for providing a firm foundation for these revealed characteristics of God to rest in great importance. Paul sends greetings to this church congregation filled with the power of prayer, and hope and thankfulness for the marvelous grace of God wrapped in Truth found at work here:
Colossians 1:1-6 (KJB) Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother, 2 To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4 Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints, 5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; 6 Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:
The fullness of God is a spiritually vast arena in which to wrap our finite heads around as we live in this world. This book gives us many great highlights about the character, essence, longsuffering, and strength of Christ. It delivers to our hearts a vital message of the necessity for every sincere child of God to walk worthy being fruit producers and mature disciples in this world. Doing so is not conceivable when serving and pleasing self, but it is possible in serving God and as He leads in serving others rather than self. Many members of this spiritually alive church were busy about savoring and serving God.
In fact, it can be said that perhaps it was God’s will for Paul and Epaphras to meet in captivity for the writing of this letter in giving this church, and us today, vital encouragement and hope and a comprehensive picture of who Jesus Christ is in urging us to become spiritual fruit producers according to Hs will. It is inside this complete spiritual wholeness in Christ which naturally drives a man or woman of God to serve Him by serving others. It places a desire for heart-felt service under the headship of Christ.
The magnitude concerning the cost of forgiveness of sin is clearly stated in Colossians 1:14, as forgiveness of sin was purchased with the shed blood of Jesus Christ and opened an avenue paved with grace leading to the possibility of having salvation and eternal fellowship with God forever. The Savior Christ is a Personal Christ that every individual must choose to know and recognize in his or heart. It is not enough to know about Him and His shed blood, His saving power, and about eternal life. The truth is that a sincere child of God knows The Savior on a personal level. God and His Son Jesus Christ are invisible on this earth today but are spiritually alive in heaven. God has left us His divinely recorded Word and multiple visible signs of creation carefully illustrated as a magnificent backdrop in this world.
The book of Romans in 1:20 says further “they are without excuse…” being a pointed reference for all mankind to digest concerning God. That though He is invisible from our limited viewpoint on this earth His attributes; righteousness, holiness, and glory can clearly be viewed. This leaves no room for any person to offer excuses about not knowing God personally.
You see, the genuine believer who is physically alive in this world is complete in Christ. He has no limitations, no fears, or hang-ups, other than what things he allows to limit him as he sojourns in this world. He serves the same God that has been alive since the beginning, the One who is supernatural in nature, who has unlimited power and has already won the final battle with satan and will return to this earth one day soon to bring the children of God into fellowship with Him forevermore.
Yes, it is true, every sincere child of God has been made perfect in his standing with Christ. Not only that but every believer has the supernatural power and presence of God at work in his heart. Knowing this does not mean that he or she will be perfect like God on this side of heaven for every person is present on this earth in his wicked flesh, therefore his heart is willing to follow God, but his flesh is weak and wobbly and can succumb to the wiles of the devil in moments and seasons of self-will.
Therefore, a continual battle exists in the mind and heart in the life of every spiritually regenerated heart in this world. However, we do not face this spiritual skirmish alone, for God has given us everything we need to as we live for Him in occupying our tent of flesh in this wicked world. You see, God did not only send His Only Son to pay the price for sin, but He gave His spiritual family every armament needed in clothing ourselves in standing firm with Him in victory while present on this earth.
You see, God in His essence is all that a person needs and desires as they sojourn in this world. A sincere child of God will seek those things above rather than place his focus on things of this world because God is the All in All or The Invisible God, the Savior, Creator, Sustainer as is presented by the Apostle Paul in the book of Colossians. These wonderful attributes of God are presented for us in the entire canon of scripture. God gives each of us who choose to live in Christ His spiritual attributes and attractiveness including His unlimited power and presence for sowing seeds of the gospel message, untold spiritual blessings, benefits, and especially in bringing Himself all the glory and honor, both now and forever.
Yes, God is all things to all people possible through the finished work on Calvary of His Only Son Jesus Christ. God is above all things and authority and victor of all. He is set above all principalities and demons. However, a person must choose to open and apply His gift of liberty, grace, mercy and eternal life allowing His power and presence to reside in their heart and life.
