Deliver But Their Own Souls

Ezekiel 14:12-14 (KJB) The word of the LORD came again to me, saying, 13 Son of man, when the land sinneth against me by trespassing grievously, then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break the staff of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it: 14 Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord GOD.

These scripture verses are abundantly rich in the power and presence of God who is speaking to the prophet Ezekiel about sin, God’s consequences for sinners, and the importance of each person’s personal responsibility towards God.  In other words, these verses give us a “spiritual mouthful” to both hear and heed.

The context of this verse is first that God gave these vital lessons to Ezekial.  It is not something that this Prophet made up to teach others.  No, this directive came straight from the world of the Lord.  God announced to Ezekial the current spiritual condition in the land as well as what would happen should the people choose to continue living on this spiritually parched pathway in this wicked world.

Notice that this verse states that Noah, Daniel, and Job would, through God’s righteousness, deliver their souls in such a time of great wickedness.  How? Because the power and presence of God was at work in their softened hearts and lives.

You see, God left nothing to surprise these ancient sinful hearted people in His pointed message about the coming future.  Through Ezekial, God gave them a message of hope and righteousness, available only if these people would choose to apply the presence of the righteousness of God as did these great men of faith.
