Destroy The Seed Royal
2 Kings 11:1-3 (KJV) And when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the seed royal. But Jehosheba, the daughter of king Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from among the king’s sons which were slain; and they hid him, even him and his nurse, in the bedchamber from Athaliah, so that he was not slain. And he was with her hid in the house of the LORD six years. And Athaliah did reign over the land.
Athaliah is the mother of Ahaziah, the former King of Judah and daughter to the former King Ahab. As you read in these verses above and further in other scripture, it does not take long to understand that she is evil at heart. It seems she is so corrupt that after her son’s death, she proceeds to destroy the lineage in waiting to ascend to the throne to seize the throne herself. Yes, Athaliah is willing to do whatever is necessary to pivot herself into leadership over this land, even murdering some of her family members.
The seed royal mentioned in this scripture points to Athaliah resorting to the destruction of her children and grandchildren. Think about the level of evil it takes for a person to choose to kill their own family, especially young, innocent children. Even as she resorted to carrying out such corruption, Athaliah did not have it all figured out. It seems that another woman was planning to prevent this royal seed from being destroyed at the hands of this wicked woman.
A nurse named Jehosheba was willing to save one of these boys. This lad’s name is Joash, and this brave nurse hid him away in the temple from the evil intentions of Athaliah. This nurse was both bold and successful and used by God in this endeavor to save the kingly lineage from certain destruction.
Though Athaliah had evil intentions, God saved this young boy from death. Not only that, but this young man, at the age of seven, was protected from demise and is eventually placed in leadership over this country at the tender age of seven by God.
