Devil (Slanderer)

Found in the following verses – Mt 4:1,5,8,11; Mt 9:32-33; Mt 11:18; Mt 12:22; Mt 13:39; Mt 15:22; Mt 17:18; Mt 25:41; Mr 5:15-16,18; Mr 7:26,29-30; Lu 4:2-3,5-6,13,33,35; Lu 7:33; Lu 8:12,29; Lu 9:42; Lu 11:14; Joh 6:70; Joh 7:20; Joh 8:44,48-49,52; Joh 10:20-21; Joh 13:2; Ac 10:38; Ac 13:10; Eph 4:27; Eph 6:11; 1Ti 3:6-7; 2Ti 2:26; Heb 2:14; Jas 4:7; 1Pe 5:8; 1Jo 3:8,10; Jude 9; Re 2:10; Re 12:9,12; Re 20:2,10

(slanderer). The name describes Satan as slandering God to man and man to God. The former work is, of course, a part of his great work of temptation to evil and is not only exemplified but illustrated as to its general nature and tendency by the narrative of Gen. 3.

Smith’s Bible Dictionary

Prince of the Power of the Air

Ephesians 2:2 (KJB) Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Previously before salvation, our lives were highly driven by the devil. Although his work is unnatural in its operation, it nevertheless is very real in its influence on us.

Spirit that Now Worketh

Ephesians 2:2 (KJB) Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Satan is a spirit. The word worketh means energizing. The devil spiritually energizes the people of the world.

God of this World(Age)

2 Corinthians 4:4 (KJB) In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

The god of this world; rather, the god of this age. It is, as Bengel says, “a great and horrible description of the devil.” He is not, however, here called a god of the kosmos, but only of the aiṓn, the present dispensation of things as it exists among those who refuse to enter that kingdom in which the power of Satan is brought to naught.

Pulpit Commentary

Some claim the word “world” here is properly referring to this age and not a planet. The greek word aiṓn does refer to an age or dispensation. However, if it were referring to our “world” our world shall be changed when Jesus returns – Isaiah 65:17 (KJB) “For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.”

Hollywood's Satan

Power of Death

Hebrews 2:14 (KJB) Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

Jesus, through His death and resurrection, removed Satan’s hold on death. Satan does not hold the keys of death, but death is his domain inasmuch as Satan is the author of sin.

This does not affirm anything of his power of inflicting death in particular instances–whatever may be true on that point–but that death was a part of his dominion; that he introduced it; that he seduced man from God, and led on the train of woes which result in death. He also made it terrible. Instead of being regarded as falling asleep, or being looked on without alarm, it becomes, under him, the means of terror and distress.

Albert Barnes – Notes on the Bible

Prince of this World

John 12:31 (KJB) Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

The “prince of this world” is none other than Satan. This verse says that Satan was about to be cast out. Looking back over almost two thousand years of history, we know that Satan’s power still continues. The beginning of his fall from power began at the Cross and more specifically at the resurrection of Jesus.

Ruler of Darkness

Ephesians 6:12 (KJB) For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

The war that every Christian fights is spiritual. This verse makes clear who our adversary is. It is against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. These four descriptions, refer to satan’s power. Implicit is the large, and highly coordinated satanic empire which permeates this world.

Leviathan

Isaiah 27:1 (KJB) In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.

The individual described as leviathan, the piercing, and crooked serpent is a metaphor for Satan. Satan is also described as piercing and crooked which refers to his moral aspects.

Lucifer

Isaiah 14:12 (KJB) How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

Dragon

Revelation 12:7 (KJB) And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,

The “WAR IN HEAVEN” is started by the attempt to expel the DRAGON and his angels From the Heavenlies. That the DRAGON (Satan) and his angels were not cast out of Heaven at the time of his “Rebellion” (which antedates the present earth), and confined in some “prison-house,” is clear, for he was at liberty to visit the Garden of Eden and tempt Adam and Eve, and he had access to God in Heaven in the days of Job, 2000 years before Christ (Job 1:1; 2:8), and he was free to visit the earth in Christ’s day and tempt Him in the Wilderness, and later to sift Peter. His origin is more or less shrouded in mystery, but one thing is certain, he is a “created being,” and that of the most exalted type.

Larkin’s Commentary on Daniel and Revelation

The Deceiver

Revelation 20:10 (KJB) And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

As punishment for his final act of Rebellion, Satan shall be seized, probably by the same Angel that chained him, and hurled into the “LAKE OF FIRE,” where he will find alive and waiting for him the “Beast” and the “False Prophet” who were cast therein a 1000 years before. This shows that there is no such thing as annihilation. The “Lake of Fire” was prepared for the Devil and his angels (Mt 25:41), not to consume them in, for God could do that with fire from heaven, but to PUNISH THEM IN; and all those whose names are not written in the “Book of Life” will go to the same place to spend eternity. The reason why Satan does not want people to read and study the Book of Revelation is because he does not want the world to know that there is to be an end to his power.

Larkin’s Commentary on Daniel and Revelation

Apollyon (Destroyer)

Abaddon (Destruction)

Revelation 9:11 (KJB) And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.

This demonic king of the abyss is named in Hebrew Abaddon which means destruction. In Greek, his name is Apollyon which means destroyer. This is none other than Satan.

Beelzebub (Prince of Demons)

Matthew 12:24 (KJB) But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

The Pharisees witnessed the miracle, they claimed Jesus was acting under Satanic power. Beelzebub was a name used to debase Satan which meant lord of the flies.

Belial (worthless, ruthlessness)

2 Corinthians 6:15 (KJB) And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

The name Belial is transliterated from Hebrew. It literally means worthless but is another name for Satan. His point is blunt. What harmony is there between Christ and Satan? The answer is none and is something we should all remember.

Matthew 4:10 (KJB) Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

The Wicked One

Matthew 13:38 (KJB) The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;

In the very next verse Jesus comments on the children of the wicked one – Matthew 13:39 (KJB) The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.

Further instruction from Jesus can be found in the gospel of John:

John 8:44 (KJB) Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Tempter (one who seduces another to do evil)

1 Thessalonians 3:5 (KJB) For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.

The apostle was afraid lest by any means the tempter had tempted them. The devil is a subtle and unwearied tempter, who seeks an opportunity to beguile and destroy us, and takes all advantages against us, both in a time of prosperity and adversity; and he has often been successful in his attacks upon persons under afflictions. He has often prejudiced the minds of men against religion on account of the sufferings its professors are exposed to. We have reason therefore to be jealous over ourselves and others, lest we be ensnared by him.

Matthew Henry

Matthew 4:3 (KJB) And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

Accuser of the Brethren

Revelation 12:10 (KJB) And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

Satan has been allowed access to God to accuse the brethren night and day. Praise Jesus Christ, we have “an advocate with the Father” (1Jo 2:1), who is greater than Satan.

1 John 2:1 (KJB) My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

Angel of Light

2 Corinthians 11:14 (KJB) And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

The devil is in the “religion” business. Religion is big business today and Satan is running the enterprise. The fact that Satan is able to portray himself as an angel of light is very evil. He who is in fact the King of darkness goes about cleverly masked as a messenger of light. How many Pastors or Reverends could be accused of the same?

Genesis 3:4 (KJB) And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

Liar

John 8:44 (KJB) Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Satan is a liar. Some of the first sins Satan committed was getting people to believe his lies. as when he deceived Adam The fact is that has been so successful satan has never really needed to change his tactics, he just keeps dragging man down to perdition. Satan has lied and man has believed him, hook line and sinker as the saying goes.

  • Here are just a few of Satan’s lies
  • The Bible is just a book written by men…
  • All Bibles are the same!
  • Pastors just love money!
  • Nobody needs to go to church….
  • Westcott & Hort said there was no heaven, no hell, no angels, no Satan. And people today argue that the bible they created is worth using.
  • We don’t need God!
  • God is not real….

Genesis 3:1 (KJB) Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

The father of it. The father or originator of falsehood. The word “it” refers to lie or falsehood understood. From him, falsehood first proceeded, and all liars possess his spirit and are under his influence. As the Jews refused to hear the truth which Jesus spoke, so they showed that they were the children of the father of lies.

Matthew Henry

Murderer

John 8:44 (KJB) Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

From the beginning of the world, or in the first records of him he is thus represented. This refers to the seduction of Adam and Eve. Death was denounced against sin, Ge 2:17. The devil deceived our first parents, and they became subject to death, Ge 3. As he was the cause of why death came into the world, he may be said to have been a murderer in that act, or from the beginning. We see here that the tempter mentioned in Ge 3:1 was Satan or the devil, who is here declared to have been the murderer.

Matthew Henry

1 John 3:12 (KJB) Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.

Enemy

Matthew 13:39 (KJB) The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.

The sworn enemy to Christ and all that is good, to the glory of the good God, and the comfort and happiness of all good men. Satan is an enemy to the field of the world, which he endeavours to make his own, by sowing his tares in it. Ever since he became a wicked spirit himself, he has been industrious to promote wickedness, and has made it his business, aiming therein to counterwork Christ.

A foe; an adversary. A private enemy is one who hates another and wishes him injury or attempts to do him injury to gratify his own malice or ill will. A public enemy or foe is one who belongs to a nation or party, at war with another.

A Roaring Lion

1 Peter 5:8 (KJB) Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

Satan tempts under three forms:

1. The subtle serpent; to beguile our senses, pervert our judgment, and enchant our imagination.
2. As an angel of light; to deceive us with false views of spiritual things, refinements in religion, and presumption on the providence and grace of God.
3. As a roaring lion; to bear us down, and destroy us by violent opposition, persecution, and death. Thus he was acting towards the followers of God at Pontus, etc., who were now suffering grievous persecution.

Adam Clarke

The Annointed Cherub

Ezekiel 28:14 (KJB) Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

It appears that Satan at one time was the anointed cherub—the highest ranking angel of God, who was appointed to that position by God Himself. He was assigned to spread forth his wings over the throne of God.

Ruler of Devils

Matthew 9:34 (KJB) But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils.

This is a very descriptive list that explains many of the characteristics of Satan. I pray this article has been a blessing to you, and possibly opened your eyes and mind to the evil nature of Satan.
