Drank Truth But Did Not Devour

Hebrews 6:4-6 (KJV) For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

Sadly, many souls publicly profess to know Christ but are in love with their own idea of God, especially when it comes to enouncing sin, serving, and savoring.  The truth is that many do not know God; though they have sampled and nibbled on His Word a time or two, they are not mind and heart familiar with God’s Word.

Those souls who know God devour His truth and readily consume His Word with sincerely softened hearts, but those who do not personally know or love God cannot understand or apply scripture. The Word of God is not a sampler plate that anyone can nibble and taste the things they like and skip over those they do not like.  Savvy and snoopy professing Christians move about in this world with an air about them that stinks to high heaven.  Sincere Christians delight in God and His Word and take on the sweet fragrance of Christ.

One of the most important truths for any Christian to consider is that Christ died for sin, all sin, past, present, and future.  Each time a sinner gains freedom from a lost state of heart and their favorite sins with the day-by-day with power and presence of Christ, sweet spiritual success is achieved.  However, if a professing Christian chooses to turn back to his sin and lives among wickedness, never closing that gap with Christ, this backward move is akin to placing Jesus Christ back on the cross to atone for the sin again.

Indeed you understand that God sent His Son to atone for sin – once for all.  Understanding this statement means that Jesus Christ achieved victory for all corruption for all souls at the moment of His shed-blood sacrifice upon the cross at Calvary.  All it takes to receive His gift is for a person to place faith in this finished work of Jesus Christ and to confess his sin-filled state before God.  Suppose a person fails to remain in right standing with God after regeneration. In that case, he stands in open disgrace before God, lacking repentance and cheapening God’s grace, and because of his return to wickedness fails to receive an eternal address upon his physical death.

The grace of God ushers a spiritually humble and enlightened man into eternity upon death in fellowship with God.  However, any person standing in a state of disgrace with God at life’s end will face the eternal fires of Hell for all eternity, for genuine salvation always brings a change of heart and a new life once for all.
