Establish Righteousness in the Gates

Amos 5:15 (KJB)   Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

The apostle Amos encouraged the ancient leaders of his time to call for godliness and proper judgment in their land. The leaders and magistrates of cities sat in the gates where every individual had to pass as he or she entered the city.  The gates were a place where judgments were pronounced and righteousness was established through righteous leaders as the people passed through the gates.

It was the job of these Jewish leaders to call for justice and proper judgement.  They were to LOVE good and HATE evil.  They were to encourage righteousness and prohibit wickedness to enter their city.  They were in effect positioned to be “godly gatekeepers of their city.”

Today, we are not all born Jewish, nor do we live in Old Testament times, however, we have authorities, leaders, and political candidates whose purpose it is to set at the gates of our cities for vetting and judging the intent of any person who desires to enter within.  Certainly, you will agree that not all leaders are supportive of launching moral, loving, and godly expectations upon those who are entering our cities and states, but rather allowing some with an intent for multiplying evil and corruption a “free political pass” to enter inside our gates.

The same God is still in control today who was also the final authority in ancient times. God is gracious and desires to allow His grace and mercy to freely flow in our land, but He allows mankind, through the divine placement of authority figures in this land, to serve citizens by making decisions for promoting the safety and security at the city gates.

One day, however, God’s judgment will be the final measurement.  All judgments will be measured against His plumb line, or perfect standard of LOVE and HATE.

Today, many in this world often get the true meaning of LOVE and HATE confused.  It is with sincere LOVE that a man chooses to mirror God’s image and characteristics, and HATE anything that opposes His holy judgment and estimation.  If every professing man of God were to follow in His image this land and the gates of our cities would operate on a much different judgement scale.
