Eternal Riches Only Come from God
And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. (Mark 10:17-18 KJV)
Jesus had just finished teaching a crowd about the possibility of receiving eternal life. A young man, who appeared to be of means or rich, followed after Jesus Christ a distance to personally inquire further about receiving eternal life. His heart yearned to possess eternal life. Surely today it was within his reach.
This young man called out to Jesus Christ with these words: “Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” Right away Jesus asked this man why he called him good. This important question was to drive home the truth that only God is inherently good, while mankind is naturally born with an evil leaning nature.
This man did not understand the concept of good and evil but was eager to learn. The spiritual prospect this man had brewing in his heart quickly lost its steam when he learned he must be willing to forsake all. He was not prepared to leave his riches behind to follow after Jesus and receive eternal life.
