Focused on Minute Details
Matthew 23:23-24 (KJB) Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. 24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
The scribes and Pharisees were hypocrites. Sadly, they often missed the bigger picture because they got unnecessarily lost in the details. These verses indicate they were swatting at gnats or to put it in more familiar terms, they worried and agonized over minute details losing sight of what is really important, especially as it pertains to weightier matters, such as judgment and eternal life.
Sadly, many souls participate in the same “pharisee type” finger-pointing games today. Still, it does not have to be that way in interpersonal relationships with God and among others, especially if individuals were concerned with their shortcomings rather than taking precious time to find fault with others, never looking in the mirror themselves.
These verses point out here that the Pharisees resorted to waging their finger for pointing out when others are “breaking the rules,” especially when it comes to tithing, as was the case here. Because, as you know, the Pharisees were quite affectionate in making sure that others are keeping the law and are colder towards others and not willing to tolerate such differences.
It is often easy to get lost in the details and to miss the bigger picture. However, when a person chooses to adopt the character of God, that person naturally looks in the mirror at himself first, before pondering the choices and actions of others. Ultimately a child of God is most concerned with eternal spiritual matters rather than another’s outward appearance, activities, and differences in opinion.
