1 Corinthians 11:1 (KJB) Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
This succinct verse divinely recorded by Paul gives us a simple, but spiritually complex, message. We are to follow Christ. It is true a man cannot choose to follow God and “have it his way” or entertain thoughts of “Burger King Moments” happening in this world, but such moments do not take place among God’s spiritual family.
It is always God’s way and desires at work in the heart and life of a child of God (John 6:38-40).
A child of God both desires and is willing to follow God rather than his own direction as he sojourns in this world. He naturally desires to please God rather than his own self.
Please take note that a willingness to follow God includes not choosing to follow any man, even a genuine professing man of God, but simply to follow God Himself.
In these verses, Paul is saying to his followers- “Don’t follow me.” Don’t imitate my life.” “Don’t fall in love with me, Paul.” Though it is good to appropriately revere a pastor or other man of God, Paul is clear in teaching:
“Follow Christ at work in me.”
A child of God needs to be intimately aware in his or her choosing to follow God rather than electing to follow the ways of this world, or even shadowing a sincere man of God. Be careful in lifting a pastor or other leader above that place which only God can occupy in a man’s heart.
