Song of Solomon – Kisses and Wine

Song 1:2 Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth:

for thy love is better than wine.

****************************************************************

Immediately we are faced with the taming of the Western, Americanized dirty mind-set. Know that influence, and remind yourself of it all through your reading and study of this book! Live, think, and study… above that gutter plain. It is a shame we have to mention that, but it needs to be mentioned, so we will deal with it. Let us live above that at all cost! TV, music, magazines, and dress… just about everything in this time, and culture, seeks to drag you down, into a gutter mind-set. Living and thinking above it takes knowledge and understanding of the fact that it is there, and it takes constant vigilance (see Prov. 4:23), and effort! It takes applications of His Words and prayer! All of us, MUST be “aware,” and vigilant (see also 1Pet. 5:8), or it will creep in and sow seeds of filthiness that will grow into great thorn trees and poke you every time you move (see Prov. 24:30-34). We CANNOT let it tint or color our thinking, and lives… at all cost! And, it for sure CANNOT be allowed to be the determining factor in our studies of the pure, perfect, pristine, words of God! Ever!  Do you think for a nano second God would ever mean, or let that filthiness into His pure Words??? Now……

Here she is longing for closeness to him. This is not a distance thing! Closeness! This is an expression of great love, tenderness, and desire. Stop here and read Jn. 15 please. Now, are not His pure Words kisses, from Heaven? Have they grown mundane, ritual, and/or routine? Can we say, and the Psalmist did all over Psalm 119, that we love His Words? Oh, my children, have you that intimate desire, for Him, and His words in your life? Do you ever say it TO HIM? Has he not… kissed this earth, with the blessing of the Words of His mouth? Did He not give, from His own mouth, the Words of your Bible… FOR you, and TO you? DO you consider them “kisses?” What a thought! Are they not tender kisses on the cheek of  your very heart, at all times, and in all ways? Are such ever from any other? Are His, not kisses of understanding, wisdom, comfort, assurance, peace, affection, truth, and true love to you… to His church??? Do we seek them from any other… ever? Are the ones of another shepherd… to be trusted???? Do you seek Him this way, and tell Him so, in your Bible study??? Golden kisses, from Heaven and from the Father, and our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

My friend, listen to me, He gave His life for His church, He died for it, and He gives us His kisses, of His Words, and we better start seeing it that way… and thanking Him!

Now, I want  you to put this lesson down, and read John 17 all the way through! (A final earthly prayer for His church!)

Pr 2:6For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
Pr 4:5Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.
Pr 4:24Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.
Pr 5:7Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth.
Pr 7:24Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.
Jn. 17:8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

Prov. 8:7-10 For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips. All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them. They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge. Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.

Ps. 85:10-13 Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven. Yea, the LORD shall give that which is good; and our land shall yield her increase. Righteousness shall go before him;

and shall set us in the way of his steps.

Now, I want to say something else, and I want to say it emphatically.  A kiss here is gentle, and it is in great affection… and love, and it is personal. Has Jesus Christ not kissed this earth with the kiss of salvation, and WORDS of salvation, ALL OVER this world? Oh, my soul, yes, He has. But… those kisses have been in so many hearts rejected-  even by His own! Does this blow upon the flame of pure passion and love back to Him, for His Words? Do  you see them that way? Do they not kiss your heart always?

A kiss should be pure. It should be FROM ONE, TO ONLY one! It is, again, of GREAT affection and love. My little children, you must get yourself up on the plain that this is on, and abide there. You must see His Words this way, and treat them this way, and speak back to Him this way, FOR His Words in your life and heart. Oh, the Words of salvation, the kiss of mercy and truth in our lives. Do we appreciate them as we should? Are they not also kisses of peace… even in the face of death and the grave? Are they nor kisses of righteousness? Oh, how He has kissed this earth, with His Words… and His very being!

Now, let us begin to examine the last part of our opening verse. “for thy love is better than wine.”

I have prayed about this, and meditated on it, and I have come to a conclusion, for our study, about the use of the word “wine.”

Wine is a symbol, to the world, as the finer things in life. Actors portray having wine as the ultimate party life, refined life, and that which is to be the most desired. They speak of the fermented wine of this world. It is held up as the ultimate. Is it… more than His love???- to us???

I used to be a heavy drinker, and a heavy party guy. Not anymore. The world, especially this country, today, is a party, boozing, drinking, culture. Let me, and let us, never look back on the days of that with more affection and love (or any affection or love, for that matter), in place of, or more than… His love. May the world’s level of love for these things, this “wine of the world,” NEVER be to us, greater than His love. It is His love that brought me out of what was about to pickle my liver, and literally kill me. That old flesh will deceive us, and pop-up and try to look back with the fondness that IT had, and override, and shut out the message of this verse. I have come to abhor that which is evil, because it draws me to it, and away from Him, Who kissed me with love, and salvation, and life!

The message of this verse, to you and me, to His church, is to esteem Him, and His Words (the kisses of truth, mercy, and salvation, comfort, peace, and life) and not the “wine” of this world; not the party life, or anything of it! IT never DID, nor COULD kiss you with anything but fake, deceitful kisses of death and drunkenness. HE kisses with salvation, peace, truth, and life everlasting. Does His church, today say this… or feel this way?

for thy love is better than wine.
