Forgiveness in The Face of Death
Luke 23:34 (KJB) Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
Just before succumbing to His death, Jesus Christ reached over and above the hatred and extended His forgiveness. A time of intense suffering and what seemed to be adverse circumstances did not prevent Jesus Christ from extending unlimited forgiveness to men who did not deserve His mercy and grace.
Think about this moment in greater detail. Jesus Christ was hanging very near His physical death on the cross. His agony, because of the burden of sin, was substantial. At that moment these men lingered near the cross waiting for His death to come. When His death came these men cast lots to disperse the few items that lay at the foot of the cross which belonged to Jesus.
Jesus both lived and died physically on this earth with little in material items but with a heart full of God’s mercy and grace. The little that He had was lying at the foot of the cross, given up willingly so that He could fulfill the will of God. Upon His death, His raiment was divided by lot among a few men, but His forgiveness was offered to all mankind.
