Gathering for Gain
And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take. (Mark 15:24 KJV)
Mark was inspired of God to record these few moments which took place at the cross of Calvary just after Jesus Christ succumbed to His physical death.
Imagine the thoughts and feelings that might have gone through your heart and mind if you were present to witness this scene a few thousand years ago.
Men were gathered at the foot of the cross for this impromptu meeting as Jesus Christ’s lifeless body hung on the cross. These men had assembled to win the privilege of carrying away any of Jesus’s personal garments by casting of lots. Ancient gambling was used to “win” the meager personal belongings of Jesus Christ who lived and died in an unassuming fashion.
This first gathering after the death of Jesus Christ was for selfish gain. It was for what these men could take away from the cross.
Men still gather at the foot of the cross today to take away something away from Jesus Christ rather than to give their life to Him for the purpose of bringing honor and glory to God.
