Gird Up Your Mind
1 Peter 1:13 (KJB) Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
“Gird up the loins of your mind…” Umm, what does the word gird mean?
In ancient times girding up your loins was a simple maneuver used for pulling up and securing a robe or a gown to one’s loins. Doing so allowed a man to work. Men used to wear long robes and at times it was necessary to secure them around their loins for undertaking certain tasks.
This verse is not speaking of wrapping a robe around one’s loins but is speaking of wrapping the loins of one’s mind. It is speaking to professing Christians and refers to the drawing in of your mind, or securely “tucking in,” or guarding the knowledge and wisdom found in a personal relationship with God. It is the act of wearing your “spiritual helmet” as mentioned in Ephesians chapter 6 which is good for protecting a spiritually renewed mind from the many assaults flung forth by the god of this world.
Further, it calls for a child of God to be sober, or calm, until the end.
The peace and protection of God preserve both a softened heart and mind inside spiritual tranquility despite any untoward circumstances working in this world. God has already secured an eternal victory for every genuine child of God. Therefore, be temperate in your day to day dealings finding your hope in God and His secured eternal victory made possible through the sacrifice of His Son!
